Watching the eagles

Duke still hasn't learned to sit on the eggs while Duchess is away. I hope somehow these eggs make it.

Oh no, he doesn't have a clue does he? he looks at the eggs with interest and then wanders off thinking .. "this is nothing to do with me" ..

I wonder if this his very first time as an expectant father? Poor Duchess has her work cut out trying to keep thse precious eggs warm all on her own.





Here's Duke looking lost because Duchess has flown off for a break ..

When Duchess calls for him he does promptly return to the nest, but as soon as Duchess flys off he follows her...

although later this morning he watched with keen interest as Duchess rolled the eggs ...

"what is she doing? does she expect me to do that?"

Lipstick and Guy are a great team.

They really are so dedicated to each other and to their eggs


Here's Lipstick with her wings spread to keep the rain off the eggs ..

And here's 'tough-guy' Guy seeing off a curious juvenile Eagle which was hanging around ..

I don't think the young eagle meant any harm, but Lipstick was getting stressed out . so Guy jumped into action.

Duke finally learned to sit on the eggs. Maybe it's too late but he knows now.

Yes at last! ... instinct took over and he got there in the end.

I feel a bit embarrassed for getting so frustrated with him when its likely this was all new to him.



Here he is sitting on the eggs like an old pro ..

Apparently one way to distinguish between Duke and Duchess is that Duke has a black mark on his beak as you can see above.





And here he is again ..

"look at me, I've got the hang of this egg sitting thingy now!"




And here is Duke again trying to get a better view .. .

"Oye! will you get OFF my back!"

Guy and Lipstick have recently had some very windy weather and this 'take-off' by Guy is fabulous ..

.. he seems to just hover and let the wind lift him up and up. Its so impressive

If Duke and Duchess' eggs are viable they should hatch between 31 March and 7 April. I'm a bit pessimistic that they will hatch has it took some time to learn to sit on the nest. Year one learning curve.

Another windy day, the first day of Spring, on the Lipstick and Guy nest.

Their eggs should be next week or so, to hatch.

No sighting of the new eaglet yet, but its definitley in there somewhere welcome to the world little one!

If Duke and Duchess' eggs are viable they should hatch between 31 March and 7 April. I'm a bit pessimistic that they will hatch has it took some time to learn to sit on the nest. Year one learning curve.

I think its going to take a miracle for Duchesses eggs to hatch, they've often been left exposed for an hour or more , but what do I know?

I think you're right Michelle they are both on a learning curve,

Duke does sit on the eggs now, but he is also happy to fly off and leave them on their own and this morning I got quite annoyed with him .. he arrived back at the nest with some fish and refused to share it with a hungry Duchess who had been guarding the nest all night , he had the cheek to eat it all right in front of her, he did this the other day as well

This is a great photo of them ... I know this probably sounds daft but I'll say it anyway, don't you think this couple actually look young? they have no battle scars that I can see and they both look so bright eyed.

Baby number two has arrived for Lipstick and Guy :j1:


Here's the new proud Father with his two eaglets ..

You can see the difference in size already between the two eaglets even though they have hatched within a day of each other





and here's Lipstick and Guy feeding them breakfast ...

Has anyone thought of names yet? I don't know why, but the names Tom and Jerry keep jumping into my head although, I think they are still awaiting for egg number 3 to hatch?

He's not ready for the duties of being a father just yet. He's learning but not fast enough. I'm pessimistic about these eggs hatching.

It's been reported that egg #3 on Lipstick and Guy's nest just hatched.

It's hard to see #3 but the shell is opened.

Duke and Duchess continue their routine with some long exposures of the eggs. I feel as if this is a learning period for a hopefully successful next year.

What a great video this is Michelle. From what I understand one of the presenters was saying that the egg(s) might not even be fertilised, have I got that right? And if the egg(s) are fertilised then their is a small chance that they might be viable? So we will just have to wait and see.

I didn't realise that Duke has been fighting off intruders, poor guy I've given him a hard time and he is doing his best for such a young adult (I wonder who the intruders are?)

So it looks like this season is very much as you have previously said Michelle . . a learning curve for these two.



I do feel sorry for Duchess though, she is trying to keep those eggs incubated and also keep herself fed.

She could do with someone like Guy who stocks the larder full of food like he does for Lipstick.



I did catch Duke briefly sitting on the eggs the other day ..

He look a bit awkward , buth then he might've been stressed and looking out for those intruders.

How I love this photo with those three fluffy heads and the proud parent looking down on them :love5: ... I'm so glad they only had the three this year.

Oh no, the chicks are already bonking each other with their heads .. I guess it really is a fight for survival. They have to learn quickly how to defend themselves and fight for food.

Now we have these three eaglets there is always something happening in Guy and Lipstick's nest, but I'm also enjoying the contrast with young Duke and Duchess who are literally still learning what to do, its made it very interesting this year.

Well there was a lot of this going on in January before the eggs come about so I think they are fertile. This is a family forum so I'll put the image in the spoiler.
