Has anyone ever looked for Mark Graison's house? The backyard only appears a couple of times and the front view may only appear once.

Is that from the dream season? I'm asking because I don't watch that.

I remember the story line when Pam went to Mark's house after seeing the car at Campbell Center. But that house looks different.

This was in season seven.

You are correct about the other house looking different. When Pam goes to his house when she thinks he is still alive they filmed at 4800 Park Lane — the same place they filmed the Southfork interiors starting in season two. These interiors are what they based the sets in CA on!

Apparently Mr. Graison got around with the gals and the houses!

what’s more, Mark appeared to have stolen Tilly the caterer from the original Barbecue episode to be his version of Teresa!

That's great! I never would've placed her in both. Lovely lady!

I can see the garages that Pam approached. And checking this home on REALTOR.com, says it was done over in, I think, 2003. It's all brick now. Don't know if it was all brick during filming and was just painted at the time...likely painted I would think. Beautiful property...one of my favorites in the city limits...and that it's the original S/F interiors makes it more appealing.

Southern Cross Ranch. Not San Angelo 284 miles away from S/F. That's too far. So the location of 12040 S Bois D Arc S, Forney, Texas was found and used. Also known as Rt 740.

It's about 40 miles due south of S/F, and about 18 miles ESE of downtown Dallas. You can see just a bit of the house just above/left of center.
Southern Cross 2.png

Some things that happened around the house.
Southern Cross.png

1 - pool
2- gazebo when JR showed up and talked to Swellen, where Miss Ellie talked to Clayton about $32bbl, Swellen talked to the lawyer about JR's divorce, among others.
3- helicopter landing area
4- parking for the home
5- deck where Clayton overlooked JR's first visit of Sheriff "Bo".
6- Swellen left S/C
7- gate opening to try to get Miss Ellie to carry John Ross to the helicopter
8- stone where Dusty and some of the boys were sittin' talkin'

I don't think the tennis court was there during filming.

Any others I missed here?

The CULVER HOTEL.

...where Faraday was shot, and where Cliffy was bonked on the head by Afton's ex-.

We talked earlier in the thread about the hotel, which sits about 6 blocks from the studio, now Sony Studios. I was a great find by johnmmil10. I found a little more info on it.

Built back in 1924, just nine years after Culver Studios (where DALLAS was later filmed) opened, it was a luxury hotel in those days, attracting stars like Clark Gable, Ronald Reagan, Buster Keaton and Joan Crawford as part-time residents. At one time, it was even owned by John Wayne for a few years, before the Duke donated the building to the YMCA. Over the years, the hotel fell into disrepair, almost deserted.

But this Hollywood story has a happy ending. In 1997, a new owner bought the property and invested in a major renovation of the historic hotel, adding antique furniture to the rooms and a patio restaurant out front. Once again, the Culver Hotel is back in business and ready for its close-up.

Also, in 1997, almost 60 years after the making of "Oz," the Culver Hotel was the scene of a three-day reunion of the 14 surviving "Munchkins." (Most of the "Munchkins" stayed at the hotel during filming). It was a public event (the city issued a proclamation declaring it "Munchkin Week") including autograph signing, costume party, and the sale of memorabilia.

Other movies have been shot at this unusual-looking landmark as well, including several Laurel & Hardy silents, and some of the "Our Gang" comedies. More recently, the hotel was seen in the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "The Last Action Hero" and in the TV series "Party of Five."

A tall, oddly-shaped, triangular building, the Culver Hotel sits right in the middle of Culver Boulevard, an old-fashioned brick tower standing alone like some urban island.

This could be a tough one. If it's in a good location, chances are that home as been replaced. Is there a driving-up shot or is it just a still? And of course the backyard could be a different location. Let's keep an eye out. Good question. We found Swellen's townhome. "This will be found."

I'm wondering about this place on Culver Blvd /Motor Ave across from the studio. That COCKTAILS signs looks old, and so familiar. The stone front does too sort of, in a "changed" way. After 35 years it's very likely been updated. Also, what a perfect place for a street shot...50 yards from the studio.

You were right to suspect this location! It did appear onscreen! Season 14, episode 9.

Excellent. Looks like they could've used the sign "Lou's..." to cover up the original for filming. I have to go back and find the COCKTAILS episodes. Thanks j10. That's definitely on my tour-stop next time in LA.

yeah, as much as I love a fine "Lou's Bar & Grill" sign, that one's pretty bland compared to the cool neon 'Cocktails Backstage' one... I wonder with that name if it's a small music venue.

I think you are right about just covering the existing sign in this case.

Here is a COCKTAILS sign I just saw in an episode I am watching (s07e06). Have not placed this one in the real world yet despite the fact that a street number of 2415 does appear on the building.

11755 National Blvd, Los Angeles. Shown here in season 10, this was the apartment of Jamie Ewing's friend where Cliff went to find out information about Jamie's death.

I'm curious. Not knowing "rights", I guess the production team has to secure rights to using these establishing shots prior to using them on film?

Did a brief lookup of info on this. Probably more than you wanted to know.

This post is referring to TV and movie filming only, not documentaries, student projects, news reporting, or other incidental projects.

Generally speaking, for TV/movies, if you shoot from a public place, the incidental buildings in the shot, even those including signs, are exempt from approval need. If you hang on a building, you MAY need to get a release, and the reputable film companies likely do to be safe. Better to get it before, as after is too late.

Some buildings, for example NYC's Chrysler building, have release requirements if the building is featured in a shot, but not if it's part of an overall NYC skyline shot.

Chrysler3-2.jpg

For a Dallas city skyline shot, you don't need permission from every building owner to use the shot. But focusing on Renaissance Tower as the Ewing building, I'd bet a release was needed back then.

upload_2019-9-16_9-44-42.jpeg upload_2019-9-16_9-46-59.jpeg

But, there is a precedent still used in court dating back to around 2005. The building housing the baseball hall of fame lost a case to a photographer who made a calendar out of pictures taken from public property.

upload_2019-9-16_9-45-37.jpeg

So, are releases required? Yes and no. Lucy tearing down a Los Angeles road as she's following Alan Beam? Did they need releases of all buildings and businesses filmed? Likely "no". To use Campbell Center (Cliff's gold tower offices) on lengthy live and picture shots, very likely "yes". Or for Jamie's friend's apartment establishing shot shown a couple of posts above? Likely "yes".

upload_2019-9-16_9-47-37.jpeg

So, there is no one-answer-fits-all. The over-arching point across most info on this subject is if you're on public property and don't linger on a specific location you likely won't need a release. If you linger, a release is usually gotten. Also do not associate a building or location with murder, drug dealing, or anything dark and negative without permission.

A very nebulous subject overall, and very legal as well.
