Was The Colbys a flop?

Ok but why would were they given some money for "Colbys characters spun back to Dynasty" if they did not create them ?

Do you have the full document? What I see is

"Box 12, Folders 2-3
Dispute 1985-1989
Scope and Contents note

Contains material regarding payment for Colbys characters "spun back" to Dynasty."

I mean, there were no Colbys characters spun back to Dynasty until 1988, so how could this dispute be from 1985 on?

And as it states, Huson and Bast developed their ideas. I am sure they brought Huson and Bast the Colby family at least.

We are only speculating here, but YOU have his private e-mail-adress. So why not just ask him, how it really was and then you can tell us. :p

No, I have not purchased it (even though I'm interested to).

I think 1985 refered to the year the characters were created.

I mean, I am going by the actual listed credits from the TV show. Creator and Developer are two different things, ask David Jacobs. :)

Well we are still friends on Facebook he's a nice man, quite political and outspoken but very intelligent and a great artist who often posts pictures of his work. He doesn't mention his time on The Colbys at all and it seems very much in his past. I think I already asked him more than enough in that interview. lol I don't think he was expecting that many questions back then. He was very kind to agree and I wouldn't like to bother him.

Because the created the concept. The Pollock were not listed as creators of Dynasty and yet they created several main characters for instance (mainly Alexis and Adam).
I am not doubting that Huson and Bast created a lot of characters on The Colbys. They obviously did. What I am saying is that the Colbys that appeared on Dynasty season 6 prior to the spin off were Pollock/Shapiro characters as Huson and Bast had no part in the writing of anything on DYNASTY.

Yeah, that's understandable. Too bad those questions didn't come to mind when we had the chance.. :(

That seems plausible and would also be an explanation why @Zable always felt that there were two different universes ... and that Sable on Dynasty is not the Sable on the Colbys ... or any of the other characters.

Although Jason, Connie, Garret and Bliss felt quite the same to me. Yeah well ... Bliss had like 2 or 3 sentences on Dynasty, so..

He was talking about Jeff and the Carringtons. Jason, Sable and co were their creations even though they first appeared in "Dynasty". The characters are developped on several pages on their bible for season 1 (for instance, it is stated that Sabella is Sable's real name - even though only Zach Powers called her like that on the show - and that she and Frankie were born in San Francisco). The Colbys are barely mentioned (if not mentioned at all) in the bible of the 6th season of Dynasty written by Diana Gould.
I had a look threw the interview I did with Paul Huson and it would appear that Bast/Huston/the Pollocks and the Shapiros all contributed to the creation of those characters. Here he mentions coming up with the name Sable.
Which is your favourite character from season 1 and why? Sable of course. She was everybody's favorite. We had had a hard time thinking up a name for her. Finally I recalled a fairytale written by le Comte de Caylus where the heroine - a princess who has had her heart stolen from her by a wicked fairy - is named "Sabella". This seemed to please everyone, even more so when Bill piped up with the nickname "Sable".

So it would seem that all three groups of writers/producers Huson/Bast/the Shapiros and the Pollocks equally came up with them and the credits could have been doled out so as to give the Shapiros and the Pollocks clout as producers. More ego/vanity credits really.

But their bible was written by then. And season 6 was written by Diana Gould and Scott M. Hamner (until the retooling at least). All they had to do was to use the characters created by Huson and Bast.

Also, even though Huson and Bast were not credited for Dynasty, they participated to the writing meetings of the episodes with the Cobys. The scenes with these characters were actually written separately from the rest :

Yes, I am re-reading the interview I did with Paul Huson now and it seems that Huson, Bast, the Shapiros and Pollocks all created these characters together. Huson mentions being present at Beacham's audition for Sable.

Was that wicked fairy by any chance called Frankie? :D
