When I finished my last fic, I said I was done with long, multi part stories for a while. But, as often happens, ideas come into my brain and refuse to go away, so here I go again.

I won't promise frequent updates - I am a pretty busy person these days, but I will write and post when I can. Please have patience with me, and I hope you all enjoy!

The Ewing Legacy

Prologue

***

"You may as well open your eyes. I know you're faking being asleep."

JR growled, opened his eyes, and slowly sat up straight. "What do you want? And how did you get in here?"

"Why wouldn't they let me in to see you, JR? We're family after all. Besides, you've been in this asylum for months and I'm the first person who's bothered to come to see you. Honestly, I think your nurses are just thrilled to think someone actually cares about you."

"We both know you don't care about me."

"That's not entirely true. I don't like you. In fact, I despise you. But I care about what happens to you because, at the moment, I need you."

"For what?"

"Cliff Barnes has something that belongs to me. I want it back."

JR's eyes narrowed to dangerous slits. "Ewing Oil doesn't belong to you. It never has."

"It doesn't belong to you anymore either, does it? I can't believe you lost Jock's company to Cliff Barnes. The old bastard is probably spinning in his grave."

"What do you want?" JR demanded, his voice cold and low.

"I told you. I want what's mine. And you're going to help me get it."

"Why would I do that?"

"Because you get to take half of Ewing Oil for yourself."

"Half?"

"That's right, JR. I get half. But you'll be president and CEO. You're a son-of-a-bitch, but you're the best Oilman in Texas."

"Why now? I haven't seen you in years. Barnes has had Ewing Oil in his sweaty, weak grasp for two years. Hell, I've been bouncing around from one asylum to another forever. Why come to me now?"

"I needed time to get what I needed to pull this off. And time to learn how to do it. Plus, I've enjoyed watching you suffer from afar these last couple of years."

"Get what you needed? What's that?"

"First things first, JR. We need to set very clear, concrete terms for our partnership. You do what needs to be done to get Ewing Oil back. You'll have half of the company to leave to John Ross. You'll get to run things. But I will be half owner. And we'll draw up an iron clad contract that says if you ever try to swindle me out of what's mine and I catch you, I get it all. Understand?"

"Why should I even consider working with you?"

"Because you'll have Ewing Oil back. And because you'll get her back too."

"Her?"

"Don't play games with me, JR. And don't forget how well I know you. I have a plan. And I have everything we need to take Cliff Barnes down. But for my plan to work, we need John Ross. That means we need her."

"Then your plan is garbage because she hates my stinking guts. So does John Ross."

"Oh, you'll take care of that soon enough. She's different. You won't be able to win her over with a few diamonds and some yellow roses, but you'll win her over just the same. And John Ross loves you. He's just really angry with you right now. But you'll be a proper daddy and have them both eating out of your hands soon enough."

"You don't think they're both better off without me?"

"Of course they are. But I don't care, JR. I want what's mine. I need them to get it."

JR slowly roused himself into a standing position. He walked slowly over to the window and stared out over the asylum's well kept grounds. "Half, huh?"

"That's right. Half. Non negotiable."

"What about Bobby?"

"What about him?"

"He gets nothing?"

"He has Southfork. And that should be ours too. He gets nothing more."

"You said you have something to take Cliff down?"

"I do. And I have the means to keep Bobby so distracted he won't even notice what we're doing."

"Then why do you need me?"

"I told you. I need John Ross. I need you for that."

JR grinned to himself and nodded. "I'm in."

"Oh, JR. I knew you would be. You can't resist the temptation to get Ewing Oil back plus get to screw Cliff and Bobby over in the process."

"First move has to be for me to get out of here."

"That's already in motion. I need to be clear JR. We work together, but on my terms and with my conditions. Do we have a deal."

"Oh, we have a deal," JR laughed. "And you know what?" He turned fully to face his visitor for the first time, "I think I was wrong about you all these years. You might turn out to be a real Ewing after all."

I'm guessing it's Ray or maybe James or even Gary.

At first I thought it was Bobby. But then they started talking about him so it's not him.

Either way I'm glad to see you're back with another story @CeeCee72 :)

Ok as much as I LOVE seeing my boy screw Barnes over the way he deserves I am NOT happy whoever this is and whatever the plan is gonna be screwing with my girl.

JR should say f*** the company, Cliff and golden boy Bobby.

Then he should fight for his woman honestly and live happily ever after with her lil Jro and their new late in life baby.

Seriously though, I can't wait to see what you have in store for everyone.

The Ewing Legacy

Part One:

***

"I think that's everything," Sue Ellen sighed, taping the box closed and standing up. "You need help getting this out to your car?"

"No," Don shook his head and looked around the room. "I got it. Is John Ross in his room? I'd like to say goodbye."

"He's at a friend's house. He didn't want to be here in case…"

"In case we fought," Don finished her sentence for her.

"Yes," she said sadly. "You can phone him tonight if you'd like."

"Thanks. I will. Sue Ellen…"

"I know, Don. I wish it had worked out too."

"You going to be alright?"

"We'll be fine," she forced a bright smile. "And I'll see you at the office on Monday."

Don nodded and picked up the last two boxes. "I'll call John Ross tonight," he said on his way out the door.

Sue Ellen watched him leave with mixed emotions. She was sad another marriage had failed, but she was so deeply relieved it was over.

She was slightly startled by the sound of the ringing phone. She walked over to the end table, pulled off her earring, and answered. "Hello?'

"Sue Ellen, it's me. Sorry to bother you."

"It's no bother, Bobby. What can I do for you?"

"I have news about JR."

Sue Ellen's heart skipped a beat as her mind flashed back to the night Bobby had called to tell her JR had tried to shoot himself and been institutionalized. "Is he alright?"

"He's fine. In fact, he's left the asylum."

"Already?" She sighed. "This one didn't last long at all. What's the address of the new one?"

"That's the thing, Sue Ellen. He didn't go to a new one. He moved into one of his condos in Dallas."

"He...he's out?"

"Yes. I wanted to warn you in case he tried to contact you."

"I wouldn't worry about that. JR hates me."

"Maybe," Bobby said doubtfully. "But he might want to talk to John Ross."

"If he does, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it."

"Alright. You need to be careful, Sue Ellen."

"With JR? You don't need to tell me that."

"I know. Take care. Talk to you soon."

"Goodbye, Bobby."

She hung up the phone and took a deep breath. JR was out and on the loose. Things could get very tense for her very quickly if he decided to try to bully his way back into John Ross's life.

"Just what I needed," she muttered to herself. "Dear Lord, make him just leave us alone."

***

"Ellie?"

Ellie put the card down and sighed heavily. "Yes, Clayton?"

"Are you alright?"

"Yes," she smiled sadly. "It's a birthday card from Gary and Valene."

"That's nice," Clayton told her, moving to sit down across from her at the kitchen table.

"It's very...impersonal. And cold."

"I'm sure you're imagining things."

"Am I? I think they're still angry about me giving the ranch to Bobby and choosing to come live with Ray and Jenna here in Switzerland instead of with them in California."

"They understand. Everyone knows California wasn't far enough away from JR. Speaking of whom…"

"Oh, no Clayton. What? Is he alright?"

"Apparently. Bobby said he checked out of the asylum and moved into a condo in Dallas."

"Do you think that means he's better?"

"I worry more it means he's back to his old self."

"Clayton!"

"Even you have to admit the last two years have been peaceful without us having to deal with his constant scheming."

"He's my son, Clayton. I love him. I want him to get better."

"I wouldn't worry about JR if I were you," Clayton grunted. "That's one black cat that will always manage to land on his feet."

***

"This is…." JR was at a loss for words. He couldn't believe what he was reading. "How did you find this?"

"It took a lot of money and a lot of time," his co-conspirator told him.

"Who's money?"

"Mine, JR."

"How did you get your hands on that much cash?" He asked, his voice dripping with suspicion.

"Never you mind. Now, you agree this is enough?"

"It's more than enough," JR closed the folder. "When will you be leaving?"

"Tomorrow morning. Here. I have one last piece of information for you."

JR took the folder and opened it up. His eyes glittered when he realized what he was looking at. "So, she's divorcing her English pansy, huh?"

"She is. It will be final in a couple of weeks."

"Well, well, seems like God is smiling down on us."

"God has nothing to do with this. I'll be back next week. I expect you to have made contact with her before then. And remember, when we see each other again, we have to make everyone think we still hate each other's guts."

"That won't be hard," JR snapped, "because we do. You concentrate on doing your part. I'll do mine."

JR watched his partner leave the condo and smiled to himself.

"This is gonna be easier than I thought," he chuckled to himself. "Like taking candy from a baby."

The Ewing Legacy

Part Two:

***

"Are you sure she doesn't know?" Jenna asked doubtfully. "Miss Ellie is the most perceptive woman I ever met."

"She has no clue," Ray laughed. "This is going to be a huge surprise."

"Have you heard from Sue Ellen?"

"Yeah," Ray grimaced. "She's still thinking about it."

"I don't understand. It's not like JR will be here."

"No. But James will."

"Maybe we shouldn't have invited him. Sue Ellen is family and he…"

"Is family too. And Miss Ellie keeps saying she wants to get to know her grandson and her great grandson."

"Still...poor Sue Ellen…"

"Sue Ellen is the toughest woman I know, besides Miss Ellie. She'll be here. And she'll be fine."

"God I hope so, Ray," Jenna muttered. "I really hope so."

***

"Did Don call you last night?"

"Yeah. We talked for a while."

Sue Ellen nodded at her son and turned her head away. "I'm sorry it didn't work out. I know how much you like him."

"You both tried, Mama. It just wasn't meant to be."

Sue Ellen looked at her son and marveled at how mature he had become. He was wise beyond his years. "No. It wasn't."

"Have you decided about going to Grandma's birthday party?"

Sue Ellen made a sour face and shrugged. "You want to go, don't you?"

"Yeah. But only if you do. Mom…"

"Yes?"

"James isn't so bad. It's not his fault Daddy is a bastard."

"John Ross!"

"Sorry," he mumbled the half-hearted apology. "I want to go, Mama."

"Alright," Sue Ellen gave in reluctantly. "I guess we'll go then. I hope I don't live to regret this."

"You won't, Mama!" He squealed, jumping up and throwing his arms around her. "I promise!"

***

JR rubbed his temples and tried to organize his thoughts.

Things were moving fast. His co-conspirator would soon be in Switzerland with the whole family, celebrating Miss Ellie's birthday. There, the groundwork would be laid to set events in motion.

He was shocked at the competence of his partner. The information that had been uncovered was incredible. It was enough to get rid of Cliff forever and to make Bobby spin his wheels on a wild goose chase for a very long time. But, JR knew something his partner didn't. Bringing Pam up now after all these years was necessary, but very dangerous. JR knew the secret he had kept since Pam's accident could be exposed.

But if that's the way it had to play out, so be it. It would be worth it just to get Ewing Oil back.

JR would do anything for that. He'd hurt anyone who got in his way.

The icing on the cake was that letter from Jock about his favorite grandson. As soon as Sue Ellen saw it, JR was sure she'd insist that her son be given what was his birthright. Miss Ellie would have a hard time resisting Jock's wishes too.

"Look out world," he whispered into the mirror. "JR Ewing is back."

Part Three:

"Sue Ellen is coming," Ray told his wife, breezing into the kitchen.

"That's wonderful news, Ray. Does everyone have their travel and lodging plans set?"

"Yep. Lucy and Sue Ellen will be here tomorrow. The rest on Friday. So everyone will be here Saturday afternoon."

"James and Jimmy too?'

"And Debra Lynn," Ray nodded.

"And Sue Ellen is okay with that?"

"She said she'd deal with it for John Ross and Miss Ellie's sake."

"Ray… do you think we did the right thing? Telling JR he isn't welcome?"

"JR isn't welcome in my home," Ray reminded her gruffly. "Not ever."

"But Miss Ellie…"

"Doesn't want to see him either," Ray cut her off. "Just drop it."

"Alright, Ray," Jenna gave in. "Whatever you say."

***

"I don't even know why we're doing this."

Val stopped packing and stood up straight to face her husband. "We're doing it for your mother, Gary."

"My mother," he repeated, his voice dripping with sarcasm, "who hasn't come visited her grandchildren since they were born, who gave my birthright to my baby brother."

"Southfork was hers to do with as she wished."

"Yeah. And she did it. Doesn't mean I have to be happy about it."

"At least try to be pleasant, Gary. Lucy is really looking forward to seeing you."

"I'll be good. For Lucy. But don't expect me to fall all over myself to make Mama happy."

"I won't, Gary," Val sighed. "Just do the best you can."

***

"You all packed?"

John Ross took off his headphones and nodded at his mother. "Yup. You?"

"Almost. Just remember we have to catch a plane early in the morning, so you have to go to bed on time tonight."

"I know Mom. Can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"How come you didn't tell me Daddy was out of the asylum?"

"How...how did you know that?"

"Christopher told me. He called me last night to see what video games I was bringing."

"Oh, John Ross...I didn't want you to feel… I mean, I didn't want you to…." Sue Ellen dropped her gaze to the floor. She didn't know how to find the right words.

"You didn't want me to wonder why he hasn't called me," John Ross finally said.

Sue Ellen raised her eyes and leveled then on her son's face. "Yes."

"Don't worry. I know Daddy doesn't care about me anymore. I'm over it."

"That's not true, John Ross! Your father loves you very much!"

"No, Mom. He doesn't. And he doesn't care about you either. So don't go getting all sentimental and feeling sorry for him. If you do, he'll just use it against you and you know it."

"John Ross…"

"I'm serious. He's done with us. And we're done with him too. Promise me."

Sue Ellen closed her eyes and sucked it a deep breath. "Alright, John Ross. I promise."

***

"What the hell do you want?"

"I came to check on you, JR," Bobby told him. "I kept waiting for you to call and you never did."

"Why would I?" JR snapped. "You left me on my own to rot the last two years."

"You told me to leave you alone, JR."

"I did. And I'm telling you the same thing now."

Bobby grumbled in frustration and nodded past JR towards the suitcase by the door. "Taking a trip JR?"

"None of your business'" JR said gruffly.

"It is if you're planning to show up at Ray's for Mama's birthday party."

"Don't you worry about that, Bob. I want to stay as far away from my loving family as possible."

"JR…"

JR didn't let him finish. He slammed the door in his face and stalked back into his living room.

It was years too late for Bobby to play the loving brother. Bobby was in for the nastiest surprise of his life, and JR couldn't wait to see the fallout.

The Ewing Legacy

Part Four:

Lucy stood in the living room, waiting nervously.

She hadn't seen her family in years, and when Jenna had opened the door, things had been a bit awkward.

She couldn't believe she was here. She had carefully distanced herself from the Ewings, travelling around the world to meet new people and try new things.

She had made a quiet little life for herself. None of her current friends even knew she was a Ewing. She was plain old Lucy Cooper to them.

Her relationship with her parents was strained. Her relationship with her grandmother was practically non-existent - just a few occasional letters and holiday cards.

She hoped she wasn't making a huge mistake by agreeing to come to this Ewing Family reunion.

"Oh well, at least JR won't be here," she said to herself.

"L...Lucy?"

Lucy looked up and saw her Grandmother standing in the foyer. "Hey, Grandma."

"What are you doing here?"

"I was traveling in this area of the world and thought I'd come to see you for your birthday. Hope that's okay?"

"Okay?" Ellie repeated, her voice thick with joy, "oh, Lucy, this is the most wonderful surprise in the world!"

Ellie hurried across the room and wrapped her granddaughter in a close hug. "How I have missed you."

"I've missed you too, Grandma," Lucy hugged her back. "So very much."

***

"Hey mom, check this out!"

Sue Ellen glanced out the window to where her son was pointing. "Yes. It's lovely, isn't it? The best part about flying is looking out over the beautiful countryside."

"You need to relax."

"What? I am relaxed."

"No you're not. Your whole body is tense. I promise, Mom, you have nothing to worry about. James is okay."

"I'm sure he is."

"Just wait, Mom. It's going to be great seeing everyone again. We're going to have a lot of fun."

"You're right," she forced a bright smile, "lots and lots of fun."

***

Donna sat back in her chair and eyed her visitor suspiciously. "Why bring this to me, JR?"

"You're married to that do-good senator and he's on the energy committee. Thought he'd want to know."

"I'm supposed to believe you're giving us this out of the goodness of your heart? Because you're a good American?"

"Now, Donna, you know me too well for that. You know I wouldn't bother if there wasn't something in it for me."

Donna nodded and returned her eyes back to the folder JR had given her. "Where did you get this?"

"It fell into my lap. Just like it's falling into your lap now. Do you want it or not?"

"No. I don't want it. But now that I have it, I suppose something will have to be done about it."

"I thought you'd feel that way," JR chuckled. He put his hat back on his head and stood up. "Good to see you again, Donna."

"Wish I could say the same, JR."

JR laughed out loud and saw himself out of her office. Everything was going exactly according to plan. "Enjoy yourself now, Barnes," JR grinned, "because your days are numbered."

Part Five:

***

"It's so wonderful to see them together again," Sue Ellen smiled, watching her son and her nephew play a video game.

She and John Ross had arrived in Switzerland earlier in the day. When Bobby and Christopher had flown in, they'd come straight to her hotel room so the boys could see each other.

"They miss each other a lot," Bobby sighed.

"We should make more effort to arrange visits for them."

"Yes. You know, part of me hoped that since you and Don are divorcing, you'd consider coming home. But now, with JR back out on the loose…"

"Have you seen him? Since he's been out?"

"Yes. I went by his condo yesterday. He slammed the door in my face."

"I suppose he's very bitter. He was away for a long time and none of us tried to help him."

"I tried. He told me to leave him alone. Besides Sue Ellen, he committed himself in those places voluntarily. No one forced him."

"You don't think he'll try to hurt himself again, do you?"

"I'm not even sure he was trying to hurt himself two years ago. JR is an experienced gun owner. If he wanted to shoot himself, hard to see how he got a mirror instead."

"Yes. I suppose so."

"Look, let's not ruin a perfectly pleasant visit talking about JR. Tell me all about this new movie you have coming out. Or about John Ross's school. Or about the foundation you're trying to set up. Talk to me about anything except JR Ewing."

"You got a deal," Sue Ellen smiled at him. "No more about JR from me!"

***

The co-conspirator hung up the payphone and darted across the street. Everything was going perfectly. JR had done his part and given the information on Barnes to Donna. And the whole Ewing family had descended in Switzerland like the black plague.

That had been so easy to arrange. Ray and Jenna were so gullible that they thought the whole thing was their idea. All it had taken was one tiny remark about Miss Ellie's birthday and how much she would like to see her family. Next thing you know, Ray and Jenna had a whole family reunion planned.

"You got my money?"

The co-conspirator jumped a little, then handed the man a thick envelope. "Here. You really shouldn't sneak up on people like that."

"I'm a private investigator. Being sneaky is my job."

"Everything set?"

"Yes. She goes to the same doctor once a week, every week. You can see the office from the cafe across the street."

"So all I have to do is keep everyone here until Monday and somehow get some of them to the cafe."

"That's right. You need anything else from me?"

"Not at the moment. But stay available, just in case."

The investigator nodded and stuck the envelope.in his pocket. "Long as you pay this well, I'll always be available."

JR chugged down his bourbon and grimaced.

His whole family was together. But no one had seen fit to give him an invitation to celebrate his mother's birthday.

And that was just fine by him. Soon enough, they would all have such huge problems that JR Ewing would be the least of their worries.

The plan to take down Cliff was already in motion. His partner was on the ground in Switzerland, laying groundwork that would unleash hell on the Ewings.

All JR had to do now was figure out how to squirm his way back into Sue Ellen's life.

It would be hard this time. It had been so long since he'd seen her and there was such much ugly bitterness between them now. She wasn't likely to welcome him back into her life without a fight.

He picked up the picture on his desk and smiled down at his ex-wife. "That's alright, Miss Texas. I always loved a good fight from you."

Oh this is intriguing. Whoever JR is scheming with is apparently in Switzerland.

I'm glad Lucy and Miss Ellie had a nice reunion. :ch:

Somehow I am not that surprised that JR still wants to get Sue Ellen back...

I'll look forward to read more of this. :)

Sue Ellen sat on the living room sofa, drinking tea. She and John Ross had had a lovely reunion with Ray and Jenna and the rest of the family was arriving one by one. Soon everyone would be here and Clayton would be bringing Miss Ellie home to the sweetest surprise of her life.

James hadn't arrived yet. And Sue Ellen would be lying to herself if she said she wasn't nervous about how she was going to react.

James was a sore spot for her. Not because he was JR's son. The fact was Sue Ellen was smart enough to always suspect JR had bastards out there. No, it was because JR had pushed John Ross aside for James. And…

And JR had traipsed all over Dallas telling anyone who would listen that Vanessa Beaumont had been the love of his life. When she'd heard about that, Sue Ellen's heart had been shattered. She didn't understand why she even cared. But she did.

She cared very deeply.

***

"I saw JR yesterday."

"What?" Bobby's eyes widened and he turned to look at his ex-sister-in-law.

"He came prancing into my office with a folder full of evidence that Cliff Barnes was working with Asian oil suppliers to keep the price of crude artificially low."

"What? Why would Cliff do that?"

"I don't know. Seems like it would hurt Ewing Oil. But if it's true,Bobby, he's violated at least a dozen laws. And we're talking felonies."

"And JR just gave you this?"

"He did."

"He's making a move to get Ewing Oil back."

"That's what Andrew and I think too. How do you feel about that?"

"Not sure," Bobby shrugged. "But you know it's never sat right with me that Cliff has my daddy's company. And I saw his suitcase. I'm just glad his trip was to DC and not to here."

"JR would never show up here, would he?"

"Nothing is beneath JR Ewing, Donna," Bobby growled. "Absolutely nothing. You'd do well to remember that. We all would."

***

"Thank you all for being here," Ellie brushed a tear of joy away from her face. "It means more than I could ever tell you. This is one of the happiest days of my life."

"Here, here!" Clayton raised his glass. "A toast to the Ewings. And a toast to the beautiful birthday girl!"

"Here, here!" The family said back in unison, raising their glasses and drinking.

"Come on, Grandma!" Christopher rushed forward. "Let's open your presents!"

"Okay, okay," she laughed, letting the boy drag her to the sofa.

Sue Ellen smiled and took a seat across the room, full of joy watching her son and her nephew helping Miss Ellie open her gifts.

"May I join you?"

Sue Ellen stiffened when she looked up and saw James standing over her. "I suppose," she shrugged.

"Look, I know this is awkward. But this is my family too. And John Ross is my brother."

"I'm very well aware of that."

"I don't want any trouble between us, Mrs. Lockwood. I only came because Ray insisted Miss Ellie would want me here."

"You can call me Sue Ellen," she sighed. "And there won't be any trouble."

"Good. Because I'd like to be a part of my brother's life."

"I...I don't know if that's possible. It's not about you, James. You can't help who you are. But your mother…"

"Wishes she'd never heard of JR Ewing."

"Really?" Sue Ellen rolled her eyes. "Hard to believe she isn't interested in a relationship with her one true love."

"Well, it was pretty painful for her when she figured out the truth about JR."

"What truth? That he's a snake?"

"That. Yes. But mostly that JR Ewing has only really loved one woman in his entire life. And that woman sure as hell isn't my mother."

Sue Ellen was too stunned to reply. She sat staring at him, her eyes wide.

"And I'll tell you something else. JR has three sons. But only one he really cares about. And it sure as hell isn't me."

James reached out and lightly touched her hand. "My mother is no threat to you. And I'm no threat to your son."

He got up and walked away, leaving a dumbfounded Sue Ellen to stare blankly after him.

***

JR closed the folder and rubbed his temples.

He couldn't see any easy way back into her life.

She had built a nice little life for herself. Her movie studio was very profitable. She had plenty of money. Plenty of friends and connections too. She was even trying to start a foundation for providing educational opportunities for impoverished children.

She didn't need him.

And he was damn sure she didn't want him.

"How do I get back in, Miss Texas?" He muttered to himself. "You have to have a weakness. And I damn sure intend to find out what that weakness is."

It had been so easy. All it had taken was a well placed remark about the family all getting together for coffee before heading their separate ways.

It was unfortunate that the men had decided on a drink instead, but at least all the women would be at that cafe on Monday, just in time to see what needed to be seen.

Bobby would hear about it soon enough.

And then all hell was going to break loose.

All that was needed now was for JR to get off his ass and make his move with Sue Ellen.

Ewing Oil was as good as in their hands.

***

"Mama? You okay?"

"Oh yes," Ellie smiled at her son. "It's been a lovely day. A dream come true."

Bobby nodded and sat down at the table across from his mother. "Why the long face then?"

"Someone is missing, Bobby."

"Has he even bothered to call you?"

"No," Ellie shook her head. "I'm sure he's still very angry with me about Southfork. Gary is too. I can tell."

"Why would Gary care? He never had any interest in the ranch."

"It's about legacy, Bobby. JR and Gary both feel I cheated them."

"Mama, if you want to change things…"

"No. I had my reasons for doing what I did and I stand by them. I just wish my other sons would forgive me."

"Gary will be fine," Bobby told her. "JR is another matter though. He's probably a lost cause."

"No, Bobby," Miss Ellie said solemnly, "JR is my son. I love him. And I will never give up on him. Not ever."

***

"Look, I did my part. I traveled halfway across the world to celebrate Mama's birthday. I don't see any reason to stay until Monday."

"Come on, Gary. It's only one more day."

"A day I have to look them all in the eye knowing I'm the red-headed step child."

Valene sighed and rolled her eyes. "You know that's not true. Besides, Lucy asked you to stay."

"And I will. For her. But don't expect me to be happy about it."

"Don't worry, Gary," she growled. "I would never expect that."

***

"You all set for Monday?"

"Of course, JR. And you? Have you figured out how to work your way back into Sue Ellen's good graces yet?"

"I'm working on it. That letter from Jock you gave me will help a lot. Where on earth did you get it?"

"Never mind that. Just hurry up. We need everything in place before Senator Dowling goes public with the dirt on Cliff."

"I never knew how sneaky you could be."

"I watched you for years. You taught me well."

"You just make sure Monday goes as planned. Once Sue Ellen and John Ross are back in London, I'll make my move."

"It had better be a good move, JR. We need John Ross."

"And we'll get him."

JR hung up the phone and cursed. His partner was starting to annoy him. But the fact was they DID need John Ross.

And that meant they needed Sue Ellen.

He just wished he could figure out how he was going to deliver them.

Part Eight:

"So what is the new movie about?" Donna asked.

Sue Ellen sipped her coffee and smiled. ""A woman with a dark secret," she laughed. "It's a thriller, mystery type thing."

"Can't wait to see it," Jenna gushed. "I really enjoyed your last picture."

"You're doing so well, Sue Ellen," Ellie smiled. "I am so very proud of you."

"Thank you," Sue Ellen smiled back at her. "That means so much to me."

"How about you, Lucy?" Donna asked. "Anything new and exciting with you?"

"Not really. Still doing a lot of traveling and trying to find my place in the world."

"I keep telling her that her place is in California with her family," Val sighed.

"You have your hands full with the twins," Lucy reminded her. "I'd just be in the…."

"Lucy?" Val asked when Lucy stopped mid sentence. "What is it?"

"Nothing… I just…."

"What?" Sue Ellen sat up straight and turned her eyes in the direction of where Lucy was staring. "Oh my God!" She breathed out. "It..it can't be her…"

Ellie stood up and walked to the window. "Jenna?"

"Yes?" Jenna whispered, her voice shaking.

"Call Ray. Tell him and Bobby to get down here right now!"

"Should we call the police?" Sue Ellen asked.

"No. Not yet," Ellie answered sternly. "Just get the boys down here now!"

***

"Maybe we should have stayed."

James looked over at his wife and shrugged. "Didn't seem to me like anyone wanted us to. Besides, our presence was making Sue Ellen pretty miserable."

"She seemed to handle it fine. She even let John Ross play with Jimmy."

"Trust me. She didn't want us there."

"Well, if you truly want a real relationship with your family, the two of you are going to have to figure out a way to coexist."

"I want a relationship with them. Just not so sure they want one with me."

"They invited you to Miss Ellie's party."

"Yeah. And not a single one of them even attempted to get to know me."

"I'll take time, James."

"Yeah. Just not sure it's worth the effort is all."

***

"If it was her, she's gone now."

"That's impossible, Bobby," Donna told him. "We all saw her go in. We never saw her come out."

"Well, she's not in there now," Bobby told them. "Ray and I searched the whole building."

"Are you guys sure it was her?"

"Pretty sure," Jenna said. "The hat... look, I only saw her from behind, but it looked just like her."

""I saw her face," Sue Ellen whispered shakily. "It was her."

"Was she alone?"

Sue Ellen looked up at her ex-brother-in-law and shook her head. "No. There was another woman with her."

"You recognize the other woman?" Ray asked.

"I don't…" Sue Ellen hesitated, "I'm not sure…"

"Bobby," Lucy broke in, "I saw her face too. It was Katherine. No doubt."

"And the other woman?" Bobby demanded.

"It looked like…" Lucy paused and took a deep breath. "It looked like Pam."

"That's not funny, Lucy!" Ray snapped.

"She isn't trying to be funny," Sue Ellen spoke up. "It did look like Pam. I mean, not the same as she used to look, but very similar."

Bobby sank down into a chair and shook his head. "None of this is possible."

"I'm sorry, Bobby," Ellie spoke for the first time. "It's true. Katherine Wentworth went into that building and the woman she had with her looked just like Pam."

Part Nine:

"We're not staying," Gary growled at his wife. "I don't care what you ladies saw. It's not my problem."

"But Gary…"

"Bobby can figure this out for himself. It has nothing to do with us."

"How can you say that? He's your brother!"

"Which has never meant a damn thing to him and you know it."

"Gary…"

"No, Val. We're going home. My baby brother had plenty of family to support him. He sure as hell doesn't need me and I sure as hell don't want to hang around and watch him get the hero treatment from Mama again. Get packed. My mind is made up."

***

"You sure you don't mind taking him?"

"Absolutely not," Sue Ellen shook her head. "You do what you need to do. Christopher can stay with me and John Ross as long as necessary."

"I appreciate it, Sue Ellen."

"What did the police have to say?"

"Nothing. They can't force the doctor to identify a patient based only on what you all think you saw."

"What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to find Katherine. I don't know how yet, but somehow I'll find her and figure this all out."

"And if that was really Pam with her?"

"I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. But finding Katherine is the priority. That woman needs to be in jail and I won't rest until I put her there."

***

"But I don't understand why he has to stay here!"

Ray sighed and ran a frustrated hand through his hair. "Come on Jenna, Bobby is going to need my help."

"Fine. But let him stay at a hotel! I don't need him hanging around my house while he plots about finding Pam. And what about Lucas, Ray? What if Bobby decides he wants Lucas?"

"He wouldn't do that and you know it."

"No, Ray. I don't want him here!"

"Alright. I'll tell him he has to stay at a hotel."

"Thank you," Jenna sighed with relief. "I just couldn't handle it, Ray."

Ray nodded as he watched her leave the room. He couldn't believe she was still that bothered by Bobby. He hoped deep in his heart that it wasn't because after all these years, she still felt love for his brother in her heart.

***

"Sounds like everything went perfectly."

"Of course it did, JR. I planned it all out to the last detail. Bobby will be chasing a ghost all over Europe for a very long time. Now. What about Sue Ellen?"

"I'll make contact with her once she gets home."

"You know what you're going to say?"

"Yes. Don't worry. I'll have her in line and on our side soon enough."

"Good. Because without her, all this is for nothing."

"I'll handle Sue Ellen. You just make sure Bobby keeps chasing his tail."

JR hung up the phone and sat back in his chair. The truth was that he wasn't sure Sue Ellen would even take his call. He hoped she would, but if she wouldn't he was going to have to hop on a plane and go see her.

He needed her on board.

And the sooner, the better.

I can understand why Jenna wouldn't want Bobby to stay with them, although her fear of him taking Lucas away from them seems a bit overexaggerated.

I guess Bobby will stay for long with them though as it sounds like he's about to head off on a search for Pam and Katherine. I didn't expect that one.

The plot thickens, I am still having a hard time pin-pointing just who JR is working with.

"I'm so glad you decided to come home with me, Lucy."

"Glad to do it," Lucy smiled. "Figured you could use some help with the boys. Plus, it's not like anyone is waiting for me back at home."

"You're not seeing anyone?" Sue Ellen couldn't help but pry.

"Not for a long time now. Been kinda working on myself. How about you? Any new man in the picture?"

"No," Sue Ellen laughed. "I guess I need to work on myself for a while too."

"Have you talked to JR since he got out?"

"No I haven't. And I don't expect to."

"Really?" Lucy asked her doubtfully. "You don't think he'll want to reconnect with John Ross?"

"I doubt it," Sue Ellen sighed. "Although part of me wishes he would. John Ross needs his father."

"Why? JR is poisonous. He destroys everything he touches."

"He wasn't always like that. At least not with John Ross. There was a time when JR was a wonderful father."

"No time I can remember," Lucy grumbled.

"Mom!" John Ross's voice floated down the stairs, "Come help! I can't find my headphones. Are you sure you packed them?"

"Be right back," Sue Ellen rolled her eyes.

Lucy watched her aunt head up the stairs then looked around the living room. She settled her gaze on the bookshelf. There were tons of family pictures. She pulled down one of her and John Ross when her cousin had been a very small child. She stared at it for a minute then put it back on the shelf. "Oh well. At least she doesn't have any pictures of JR."

Lucy jumped a little when the phone rang.

"Can you get that, Lucy?" Sue Ellen called down the stairs.

Lucy walked over to the phone and picked it up. "Hello?"

"Lucy? What the hell are you doing answering Sue Ellen's phone?"

"I think the better question is why you are calling her," Lucy snarled. "What do you want, JR?"

"To talk to my wife."

"She isn't your wife anymore and she doesn't want to talk to you!" Lucy slammed the phone down and growled under her breath.

"Who was on the phone?" Sue Ellen asked, suddenly appearing in front of her niece.

"No one. Just a wrong number."

"Oh. Well, let's go into the kitchen, make some tea, and get all caught up! I can't wait to hear about your travels around the world."

Lucy nodded and followed Sue Ellen into the kitchen. She shook away a pang of guilt. She didn't like lying, but it was for the best. JR was up to no good. She could feel it in her bones.

***

JR put down the phone and grinned.

It might be harder to connect with Sue Ellen than he thought, with his annoying niece playing guard dog. But he always enjoyed a challenge. And the chase.

He'd spent most of his life chasing Sue Ellen. Time to get back in the game.

And this time, the deck was stacked so full in his favor, there was no way he could lose.

***

"What now? We can't just sit in this cafe from sun up to sun down every day and hope Katherine shows up again."

"You're right," Bobby sighed. "We need a PI. The cops won't help us get the patient records but a PI might."

"I'll make some calls," Ray promised. "Anything else I can do?"

"Not at the moment. I need to get back to my hotel. I have a very unpleasant call to make."

"What call?"

"To Cliff. He needs to know what's going on. I should be the one to tell him."

"You know he might hop on a plane and come over here."

"Maybe. I don't want to deal with him, but he deserves to know. He never gave up on Pam. Not even when she told him to."

"I guess Donna told you about the file she has on him."

"She did. And she told me JR gave it to her. None of that is my problem though. Cliff loves Pam. He has the right to know she might be here. And I am going to tell him."

***

"You warn your family?"

"Yes," Donna nodded at her husband. "They all know what's coming."

"I'll open a hearing next week. It'll get very ugly for Cliff Barnes very quickly."

"I know. But it's not your fault. Cliff got himself into this and it's your job to expose him."

"Yes. I just wish JR wasn't involved."

"Me too," Donna sighed, "dear Lord, me too."

***

"The boys asleep?"

"Finally," Sue Ellen groaned, sinking down into a chair across from Lucy. "I hope it's not this difficult to get them in bed every night!"

"They're just excited to be together again. They'll calm down once the newness wears off."

"I hope so. Because Bobby could be in Switzerland for a very long time."

"Do you think that was really Pam with Katherine?"

"It sure looked like her. But I can't imagine any circumstances that would make Pam be with Katherine voluntarily."

"Yeah, well, I couldn't imagine any circumstances that would make Pam abandon Christopher willingly, yet he we are."

"It seems to be a theme with the Ewings, doesn't it? Child abandonment?"

"What do you mean?"

"Just...Pam and Christopher, Bobby and Lucas, JR and John Ross…"

"My parents and me," Lucy said sadly. "Hey, Sue Ellen?"

"Yes?"

"I lied to you earlier. When I answered the phone, it wasn't a wrong number. It was JR."

"What?" Sue Ellen sat up straight.

"I… I'm sorry. I shouldn't have lied. I know how much he hurt you, but if he called to talk to John Ross, I have no right to interfere."

"It's alright, Lucy. I understand why you lied."

"Now that you know the truth, what are you going to do?"

"I don't know," Sue Ellen mumbled under her breath, "God help me, I have no idea."

"John Ross, what's it like to have brothers?"

"Huh?"

"Is it fun having brothers?"

John Ross looked at his cousin and shrugged. "James was fun, when I first met him. Then I hated him for a while because Daddy liked him more than me. I never even met Jeff. Mom says Cally has to keep him kinda a secret so Daddy won't bother her. Why are you asking me anyway?"

"I'll never have a brother. Or a sister," Christopher said sadly. "My mommy is gone and my daddy probably won't ever get married again."

"Maybe he will and maybe he won't. But it doesn't matter. You don't need siblings, Christopher. I don't either. We have each other. I'm the only brother you'll ever need and the same goes for me with you. Understand?"

"Yeah," Christopher smiled. "Glad we have each other."

"Me too," John Ross leaned over and gave the smaller boy an awkward hug. "Me too."

***

"Cliff,, did you hear me?"

Bobby heard a deep sigh on the other end of the line, but Cliff didn't answer.

"Cliff?"

"I heard you. Look, I wouldn't be shocked if they saw Pam. But with Katherine? That's not possible. Pam would never be with her."

"No. Not of her own free will anyway."

"What are you going to do?"

"Hire a PI. See if he can find out if Katherine goes to that doctor and what name she's using."

"Then what?"

"Then I'm going to turn her into the police."

"What about Pam?"

"If that was Pam, and if Katherine is somehow keeping her against her will, I guess I'll have to help her. But Cliff, if she is running around with that psychopath of her own free will, then she's on her own."

"Well, good luck, Bobby."

"You don't want to come see if it's Pam for yourself?"

"The last time I saw Pam she made it very clear that she wanted to be left alone. I don't see any reason not to honor her wishes."

"Cliff…" Bobby hesitated and took a deep breath. Part of him wanted to warn his ex-brother-in-law about the trouble headed his way, but a bigger part of him wanted to stay completely out of it. "I'll call you when I know more."

"Thanks, Bobby. Good luck."

"Thanks. I have a feeling I'm going to need all the luck I can get."

JR turned off the television and sank back on the couch.

The price of crude was hovering at the lowest price it had been in years. Independent Oil Companies all over Texas and Oklahoma were going under. Even WestStar was struggling and having to sell off assets to survive.

JR chuckled when it occurred to him that Cliff Barnes had better pray for jail, because once it came out he was scheming with Asian Oil suppliers to keep prices down, the other Oilman we're liable to kill him in the slowest, most painful way possible.

JR had tried to work out Cliff's scheme in his head. He knew Cliff was conspiring to keep down the price of crude, but he couldn't figure out why. Ewing Oil had to be suffering the same financial losses as all the other independents. "What's your game, Barnes?" He muttered to himself.

His thoughts were interrupted by the phone ringing. He reached over, picked up the receiver, and answered. "Hello?"

"J...JR?"

"Sue Ellen," he breathed out her name. "Hi, darlin'. I tried to call you earlier, but my hellion niece hung up on me."

"I know. That's why I'm calling. I knew you'd try again and I just wanted to get it over with."

"We haven't spoken one word to each other in over two years. Not sure I can say everything I need to say in one phone call."

"Try," she snapped. "What do you want, JR?"

"You know what I want, darlin'."

"John Ross," she whispered.

"Mostly," JR replied. "I know he's still furious with me and I don't blame him. But I'm his father, Sue Ellen. I deserve the chance to try to make things right."

"JR, as far as I can see, the only thing you deserve is to rot in hell."

"Ouch," JR chuckled. "I guess John Ross isn't the only one still holding a grudge against me."

"What did you expect, JR?"

"Exactly what I'm getting," he confessed. "Still, John Ross is my son and he needs his father."

Sue Ellen was silent for a few moments. He finally heard her take a deep breath and slowly let it out. "Go slow, JR. John Ross is a very angry and hurt young man. I won't have you bursting back into his life and demanding acceptance until he is ready to give it to you. Do you understand?"

"Yes. I understand."

"Give me a day or two to ease him into the idea of speaking with you. Alright?"

"Alright, Sue Ellen. Whatever you think is best."

"Good. I'll call you in a couple of days. And JR?"

"Yes, honey?"

"Believe it or not, I'm glad you're out of those awful asylums."

The line went dead before JR could reply. A huge grin broke across his face. This was going to be much easier than he'd feared. "Like I said before," he laughed to himself, "candy from a baby."
