Number 96's Don Finlayson pipped them both to the post.. by quite some years. Here's a 1972 scene:
There is a theory that the reason homophobia appears -- and then reappears -- in the culture, and always will, is that it takes something away from women. That all male attention, utility, protection and resources
must be funneled towards
her, and male homosexuality really gets in the way of that.
Nobody is saying that it's easy growing up as a little lesbian girl, knowing you're "different," but there is no prohibition of two grown women meeting up in a restaurant, giving each other an innocent hug and a kiss --- no one assumes they're lesbians (even if they
are lesbians).
It's quite different for men. To get away with any kind of public affection, even for abjectly straight guys, without making observers gasp or squirm, you'd have to be a Double-Alpha-Male 350-pound linebacker who'd never appear that he'd ever give a sh!t what anybody thought.
Some would argue that "that's just because of male insecurity." But where does that insecurity come from? They get it from the culture, and that culture is not just made up of males. Maintaining female approval is even more important to men than male approval is for women.
Which is interesting.
Homophobia is largely designed to shame men -- predominantly straight-ish men who are prodigally going his own way, doing his own thing and minding his own business -- into returning to the plantation in order to provide resources for women, as per usual. (With lesbians and actual gay men just collateral damage).
Some call that theory "preposterous" unless you think about if for 10 seconds, and then you realize it's self-evidently true.
It's also been said that homosexual men shouldn't trust leftish women 100% who identify as gay-friendly. And that only in an era (like today) when women are fully supporting themselves financially, can those women afford to be so liberally-minded (or pretend to be) regarding male sexuality... But when she goes for a serious relationship or marriage, she still looks to "traditional" masculinity and a man who can offer an income & status upgrade. So when the culture eventually shifts back to more traditional gender roles, her acceptance of male homosexuality dissipates, because all male efforts (including sexual) must be directed at
her.
Even in more diverse periods in the culture (like now), there is a certain condescension in women's acceptance of male homosexuality -- even from "open-minded" liberal women (even, quite often, from lesbians! -- who are often just as contemptuous of male homosexuality).
Did Kit Mainwaring understand any of this? Probably not. But, y'know, it was a different time.
White, middle-class, quasi-progressive women run the culture in the west. (Advertizers have known this for ages, which is why all TV commercials portray women as ethereal and brilliant, while all the men are either idiots or tastefully remain in the background looking helpful). And those women have been at the forefront of pushing trans-ideology to the point of near-insanity (e.g., surgery on 9-year-olds).
Can anybody think of a more effective way to push the pendulum -- elongated and dripping -- back towards the other direction, damaging gay rights in a backlash?
Hmmmmmmmmm....
"Lucy, I think I'm a transwoman. So, yes, now we can get married."
