Perhaps it's just the German dubbing voice, but Afton Cooper strikes me as rather dim-witted, naive, and, to put it mildly, quite untalented as a singer. We've only seen two or three episodes with her, but she comes across as a character who shouldn't be taken seriously, someone who could have stepped out of a slapstick comic.

Will her character gain more substance, depth, and intelligence?

Yes, she actually marinates and develops quite nicely.

Which is probably why the show seemed to have little use for her when she returned in its later years --- she was more interesting and possessed more layers than slutty-turned-whiney April Stephens (but Katzman like her even better).

In my opinion, yes. I ended up liking her a lot more as time went on but I know many will disagree. Eventually she won me over and became one of my favorite characters on the show.

I still want Tracey Lawton to marry Bobby instead of April, April becoming one of Bobby's non-homicidal stalkers (clearly, he has a wart in exactly the right place). Leading to both women dying in the melee in Paris.

Aggrieved by his loss and all mopey, Bobby slowly warms to a neglected Afton as Cliff chases Michelle and her piece of Ewing Oil. Cliff is infuriated upon learning of the new romance between Afton and Bobby, insisting "another Ewing has stolen another Barnes woman!" and Cliff goes on the warpath as per expectation.

When nuDALLAS begins in 2012, Bobby has been married to Afton for 20 years.

Afton's German voice is a matter of taste. I personally liked it a lot, and of all the voices that were replaced in the original show, I had the most trouble with her new voice, even more than with Miss Ellie's. Afton's original German voice actress, Marina Genschow, had passed away, so Angelika Milster (the later musical star from Cats) took over the role of Afton.

As for the character of Afton, she didn't really bother me. She develops in a good direction for me, at least in her original run of the show.

What do you mean by "recasting the dubbing voices"? I'm not familiar with that.

I don't like her dubbing, the one you can hear on the German streaming platform RTL+. But, as you say, it's a matter of taste. And we seem to have different tastes.

... as much as anyone can gain substance, depth and intelligence in Dallas, she absolutely does. In fact, there's an argument to be made that by the end of her original run, Afton has become the savviest character on the show. Then, years later, she shows up in New Dallas as a fantastic combination of Lilimae Clements and Dolly Parton.

Then, years later, she shows up in New Dallas as a fantastic combination of Lilimae Clements and Dolly Parton.

I appreciated her more in New Dallas

She was wonderful as the moral compass in her relationship with Cliff. She mirrored for us the transformation in Cliff from the vulnerable and aggrieved whipping boy of the Ewings to a hate-fueled narcissist.

Don´t forget that Afton also becomes an amazing clairvoyant and is able to see through a certain stepsister...but who wouldn´t anyway?

Initially, JR is all for the idea, as he could use Lucy's and Afton's bartenders' ears to give him information about what the Dallas oil community is saying behind his back -- but, of course, it doesn't quite turn out that way (as neither lady is his biggest fan).

Maybe not in the original show, but Lucy owning The Oil Baron's in the TNT show would have been a great way to involve her beyond wandering aimlessly around Southfork with Ray.
