You're only seeing covid as a life or death experience and completely ignoring the impact of long covid on people which can be a devastating consequence of catching the virus. I totally recognise the mental impact of lockdowns but I also recognised the mental health impact of dealing with bereavement of Covid victims and the mental health issues that are caused by long Covid which would only become more widespread if lockdown was lifted without a plan to contain the spread of the virus.

Most people have been separated from their loved ones for a year, lost their jobs, businesses and livelihoods, do you think that 15 year old who committed suicide was “just moaning” and there have many youngsters like him and some are even younger, are you one of those people who dismiss mental health issues just because you want to seem virtuous by following government guidelines and not questioning how sinister this is becoming? “See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” and we can go back to normality like in 2019 and have a jolly knees up shall we!”

The problems you are describing are largely cause by the failures of the Tory Government, not the lockdown. The NHS not being able to cope with dealing with cancer patients as well as those with Covid is largely down to how the Tories have deliberately starved it of resources over the last 10 years. You previously linked the lockdowns with the Tories trying to take away our right to protest but the 2 are not connected; it's the government not wanting to be challenged on anything that made them introduce that policy, not Covid.

You ask how many million have long covid. About 10% of people that contract the virus develop long covid, (some reports suggest it could be as high as 20%) and that includes those who are initially asymptomatic. If Covid is allowed to spread uncontrolled the numbers are potentially could rise to 10% of the population, far from a majority but many millions and enough to make it necessary to take action to stop it reaching this level.

You said "We can’t keep on with lockdown simple as" and I agree with you because I can see the damage it's having on people's lives and on the economy but where I disagree is on what should be put in place before we lift the lockdown. We shouldn't risk lifting the lockdown to relieve one mental health crisis to create another potentially worse one. We shouldn't lift the lockdown to revive the economy in the short term only to create longer lasting economic problems in the future.

My mother is a teacher in a special needs school and has seen children going hungry because their parents have lost their jobs, she works with some of the poorest in society and has witnessed children having emotional meltdowns because of this, parents crying to her feelings they are failing their families, this is what my mother has seen, and this is what I speak up for!

I’m sure the family of the 15 year old boy who committed suicide would love to challenge you on how much they’re grieving right now! And many other families who have lost loved ones through suicides, missed cancer treatments, etc How insensitive are you! Who are you to decide which grief is more real or not, you’re telling me to show empathy when it is you who clearly lacks it

The suicide of a 15 year old boy is tragic and shouldn't have been allowed to happen. However, I don't blame the lockdown in itself for the mental health issues that so many young people are facing. I blame the abject failure of the government to deal with the consequences of the lockdown they imposed.

The government should have done more to enable schools to operate safely far sooner so children and young people weren't isolated at home for so long. They should have hired counsellors and mental health professionals to have regular contact with all children when they were off school so and mental health issues could have been identified earlier. They should now be employing mental health nurses for every school to help any children who are suffering. They could have hired empty offices and conference facilities to use as classrooms so children could return to face to face teaching in a socially distanced environment. They should have installed screens in schools and improved classroom ventilation so schools could get back into operation faster. Instead the Tories chose to abandoned the needs of children.

I will always remember Ismail Mohamed Abdulwahab, the 13 year old Brixton boy with no underlying health conditions who was one of the early victims of Covid-19. He died in hospital, in pain, scared and alone. After he died, his family weren't allowed to attend his funeral. Lockdowns are necessary to prevent there from being other children and young people like Ismail Mohamed Abdulwahab, or 10 year old Fehzan Jamil from Bradford or the 13 day old baby and many other children and young people all of who died from Covid-19.

It's possible to deal with both controlling the spread of the Covid-19 virus and the mental health issues that are a consequence of lockdown, it shouldn't be an either or.

Look at America, in one fell swoop Joe Biden halved child poverty in the USA by giving every family $3,000 as part of his plan to stimulate the economy. Instead of wasting £850 million on Eat Out To Help Out (which only succeeded in spreading Covid more) we could have done something like that. The failure to tackle poverty is a choice by the Tories.

Problem is that I don’t trust any of the mainstream parties over here, I’m looking for a politician who will enact real change, and a clear and safe exit strategy out of this, without authoritarianism.

I’d rather they admitted that we will be lockdown until 2022 (it’s going to happen anyway) at least then it’ll be the final stretch before the end, a gradual reopening of society from September/October, and I mean gradual and safe.

No more flights in or out of the country close the borders (why this was never done remains a mystery, I guess the influencers of Instagram and Tiktok have connections to the Tories), vaccine the vulnerable and those who want it.

Then by Jan 2022, we can reopen safely, schools, people going back to work if they so choose otherwise encourage home-working as much as possible, some companies are using this policy already, venues open safely and that’s I think is the best exit strategy.

I struggled a lot in the first month of the first lockdown and started drinking again for the first time in many years, thankfully this time not excessively, and I was able to pull back from allowing it to become too big a issue in my life. I'm now approaching a year without drinking but it could have been very different. So I really can relate to many of the mental health struggles that people are having due to lockdown.

The issues regarding a lost generation go beyond the impact of Covid. Young graduates start their working lives with enormous amounts of debt because of crippling student loans caused by Tory increases to tuition fees. They can't afford to buy their own homes because of soaring house prices, not helped by government cuts to house building programmes and policies that have made it attractive for buy to let landlords and overseas buyers to snap up much of the available housing stock on the market which has pushed up the prices. Young people are given unfavourable employment rights including allowing employers to pay them as little as £4.55 which is almost half of what a adult can earn. The Tory government are screwing young people from every direction.

Thank you but I'm fine now but it took me a long time to get to where I am. I occasionally still get waves of depression, sometimes completely out of the blue, but I get through them. Life can throw us many difficult things to deal with and some of us manage better than others. I hope you are dealing with matters well yourself.

I'm very critical about the Tories generally but particularly how they have handled Covid. The first lockdown was way too late and had they locked down a week earlier when government scientists and the Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn urged them to, 20,000 lives would have been saved, the virus would have gotten under control faster and that lockdown wouldn't have had to have lasted as long.

I totally agree with what you have said about how the Tories have demonised and savaged various groups including young people, BAME people, LGBTQ+ people (particularly trans people) and people on low incomes. Targeting them provides a helpful distraction from their failures. Outlawing protests provides a double purpose: as well as averting attention from their woeful handling of the pandemic but it also cracks down on people who disagree with them in a manner not dissimilar to how the Chinese government responded to protests in Hong Kong that was condemned around the world.

Life can throw us many difficult things to deal with and some of us manage better than others. I hope you are dealing with matters well yourself.

I'm very critical about the Tories generally but particularly how they have handled Covid. The first lockdown was way too late and had they locked down a week earlier when government scientists and the Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn urged them to, 20,000 lives would have been saved, the virus would have gotten under control faster and that lockdown wouldn't have had to have lasted as long.

I totally agree with what you have said about how the Tories have demonised and savaged various groups including young people, BAME people, LGBTQ+ people (particularly trans people) and people on low incomes. Targeting them provides a helpful distraction from their failures. Outlawing protests provides a double purpose: as well as averting attention from their woeful handling of the pandemic but it also cracks down on people who disagree with them in a manner not dissimilar to how the Chinese government responded to protests in Hong Kong that was condemned around the world.

Don’t forget how the Chinese have persecuted their Muslim population and put them in camps, where’s the worldwide condemnation?

Yes the Tories have systematically persecuted every group who isn’t rich, I can’t even say who isn’t white because Priti Patel is a vile being.

Im hoping against hope that people will continue to protest safely regardless.

The Tories have waged war against BAME people. They are using Priti Patel as a enabler so their actions seem less racially motivated. She reminds me of a black slave who was so subservient to their owners that they would be given foreman responsibility to control a group of other slave to work the plantation.
