Constance is the missed opportunity of normalizing age gap relationships. They should have used Barbara Stanwyck’s infamous quote from „The Thorn Birds’:
„Inside that stupid body I am still young. I still feel, I still want, I still dream”… and let Connie do what many wealthy senior ladies do nowadays- hooking up with young jocks. They could have been the gym buddies of Miles or Bliss’ hunky boyfriends.

Although I'd still call her "Ruby"/Rubenstein or "Freddy"/Frederica --- because "Constance" belongs in Peyton Place.

Imho THE COLBYS just wasn't THE COLBYS without Connie. She was the elder stateswoman of the family. Through thick and thin Constance Colby Patterson stood by her family. In many ways she was like the old aristocratic aunt who had plenty of money (more than she could ever spend) and who always stood her ground with opponents. The type of woman who could soon feature in Trump's government (more is the pity).

The sister in laws exchange barbs for the umpteenth time about the family fortune; (a scene from season 1, 1985-'86):

Sable: "And what am I supposed to say? Dear Constance; I wish I had half your integrity, half your wisdom, half your sense of honor."

Connie: "But you do; Sable, you do. Almost exactly half!"

Constance was wasted on the show. There was possibilities that were never explored. She is the matriarch of the family as well as the head of Colby Enterprises.

Maybe Barbara thought she would be the queen of the show, but it was immediately clear that Sable/Stephanie was the real queen.

But both seasons of The Colbys are great.

Even if Barabara Stanwyck would have been in only one scene a week, it would have made the show better

sometime 2005 (i guess)
I don't know. Didn't really miss her in season 2. Her story was told for me by the end of S1.

I still think Lucille Ball should have been on The Colby’s / Dynasty in season 6.
Aaron Spelling was friends with her and she could have been fantastic as the bitch with a heart instead of doing that awful sitcom.
Imagine Lucy putting Alexis in her place not to mention smoking on camera more than she did.
It also should have stayed on Wednesday’s after Dynasty,Dynasty also needed to keep it together though which it didn’t

I think it was a mistake that Constance didn't have any children. They didn't have to be seen in the pilot, but they should have been mentioned, something like: the son is in the army, the daughter lives in Europe. During the first season, when the constant fight between Constance and Sable had become boring and the relationship with Hutch no longer offered anything new, one of the children could have appeared.

I wouldn't have minded if Constance had still been there for Philip's return. She would certainly have tried to mediate between the brothers, but if things got serious, whose side would she have been on?

Is it known whether the adoption drama surrounding Monica's son in season 2 was blamed on Constance because she was no longer there? Actually, the fact that Constance was so involved in the whole process doesn't make sense.

Stanwyck looked and sounded frail from the outset. This didn’t help establish her as a formidable matriarch.
