Dallas Random Thought Thread

It's too bad for Charlene Tilton that the writers never knew what to do with Lucy.
Yeah it really is.

It couldn't have been easy. Her character sticks out like a sore thumb... especially when they're all together at Southfork.

I never had an issue with her as an actress although some obviously do...it's the quality of the storylines that causes me to dislike the character. I sigh when she hits the screen.

She's simply too young and also has nothing to do with Ewing Oil or running the ranch.

If bringing in a character like Lucy, they probably should've had there be two granddaughters, have them be socialites, and their escapades can be going on more in the background, maybe occasionally have one of them date someone in the oil business to link their characters into the overall story.

This is what they would do in a Dallas remake in today's world...Lucy would be pushed as a Kardashian/Paris Hilton type.

In a perfect world, she gets shipped off to Knots Landing.

I'm re-watching the episodes where she's messing around with Eddie. The Ewing's are battling Cliff and Jamie for control of Ewing Oil and Bobby and Jenna are in the Marchetta murder storyline. Lucy has very little interaction with the family during this period. Interestingly they briefly brought Ray into Lucy's storyline just to keep her apart of the family.

And I agree. Her and Mitch should have went over to Knots Landing. Mitch and Gary's conversations about the Ewing's would have made for good TV.

She can do that because she doesn't need the $5 wage. She can walk away from the job whenever she feels like it.
It's completely unrealistic. The rich girl who loves lounging around Southfork, going to clubs, and building up her modeling resume isn't going to waste her time waiting tables 8 hours a day.

Someone who doesn't need the money has more and better options than that. The writers just didn't bother coming up with something better.

and building up her modeling resume
But that's just it, she also doesn't need a modelling career or any career for that matter. She could have become a singer if she had stayed with Willie Gust.
She does what she thinks is good for her and throws herself into it a hundred percent. A model, Valene's daughter, a poor doctor's wife, a Mainwaring dynasty wife, a waitress...it doesn't matter.

I didn’t mind her working there given the reason she was doing it. I just wish it had been executed better and perhaps led to something bigger. Like most of the storylines they gave her it just fizzled out without really ever going anywhere. Lucy was always the biggest missed opportunity to me.

Finished Season 7 and Episode 1 of 8...... Still a quality show. S7 picked up at the end and chugged along... although not showing Miss Ellie's wedding was bizarre. Babs is fired by now, odd that Miss Ellie wasn't even mentioned when Bobby is found on the floor...shot.

Season 7 has some great moments. Duffy and his angst about Pam and worries about Jenna are good. Victoria is the same. Both are terrific actors who often elevate the material when it's not always spot-on.
My quibbles are with getting rid of the Barnes family so fast. Mark- dead, Afton gone, Katherine - a wacko who leaves..... Katherine should have stayed on and become a corporate shark, screwing with Cliff. Not shooting Bobby, but becoming his antagonist for spurning her.

I can't believe Duffy didn't let anyone know sooner before season 8 that he was leaving... I bet he did. Why not leave a crumb of something to use later? A bullet left in his body to cause problems..... does not kill him permanently.... sidelines him for a while.

And Goddamn- Morgan Brittany and her luscious green emerald eyes! HD loves her! I want to swim in those beautiful eyes! That lipstick so fiery red makes her a siren of the classic sense... SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL!
Too many mock the ladies and their dos, but Victoria and Brittany have the best hair.... stacked on top or cut short.... not like today when it looks like a dirty mop sitting on top of their heads!

Not a bad idea by any means but I’m just not sure a Who Shot Jenna cliffhanger would’ve had the same impact as Katherine shooting Bobby. I did always want Charlie to end up being Bobby’s daughter though given their closeness.
It would have been great if she stayed dead. Charlie goes to live with Bobby and Pam and bobby are reunited...

I wouldn't have liked that because once again, the Ewings would have come out scott free while others suffer/die, in this case, Jenna. Not to mention that Pam, someone Jenna didn't particularly care for, would be raising her daughter.

Well, unfortunately, too much time has passed for Dallas to continue on tv post JR with original cast members.
I didn't care for Cidre's vision. I understand that there had to be some changes, some new context,
but it just became generic drama after a while, and the characters didn't seem consistent with
their history's, especially Cliff

If Dallas does come back, it will have to be with a Next Generation characters

This has to be said. Dallas was a phenomenal show, but they did things that made you scratch your head. Going back to Jenna's trial, Bobby surprises the court with a letter he takes out of "HIS" pocket from the recently killed star witness made out to her sister, and if that's not bad enough, they allow Bobby to read the letter to the court.

I'm no lawyer, but I would think BOTH the prosecution and defense would want to authenticate the letter and review it. For all I know, it might would even have to get notarized.

I'll just check it up as one of those "it's TV." Lol

Everyone now knows Katherine shot Bobby.... I would have preferred her to go the corporate shark route and give Cliff and Pam hard times. Also, they split the Barnes family up too fast- Rebecca, Katherine, Mark, Afton... poof. And why didn't we get a scene of Rebecca telling Katherine why she left her two kids and why she didn't tell her about them...

I liked "Conundrum" more than most people
Granted it spoofed "it's a Wonderful Life"
and not everything was on point,
but it had some perceptive observations.

It is at least plausible that Cliff could have had a much happier life if he wasn't battling the Ewings constantly.
Bobby may well have lost direction without JR, the loss of Jock and Miss Ellie, Gary's inability to run Ewing Oil,
and a brother who was more ruthless than JR
Carter McKay - interesting. Jeremy Wendell may indeed have become more powerful without the Ewings,
and spent more time keeping watch on McKay.
I don't know about Sue Ellen. She was supposed to be the perfect wife, as per Patricia.
She seemed a little too well off
Ray - ironic that he had the family he wanted and never knew he was a Ewing

Did JR change bedrooms at some point?

In the dream season, the camera is at the end of the hall and we see JR and Sue Ellen leave John Ross's room and walk down the hall to their two separate rooms. JR's is in the left, SE's is on the right.

Then in season ten, we see them in rooms that seem to be on the opposite end of the hallway. JR's is on the right, SE's on the left.

Am I imagining that or were they constantly swapping bedrooms? Or did Pam just dream them in the wrong rooms?

This is what I enjoy about the early episodes. They took time and energy to block each scene so that the position of the actors and their body language tells a story to back up the dialogue.

Here's a fun experiment. Pretend that you have no idea of Dallas or the characters. You can understand a lot just by looking at this one screenshot.

The woman standing: She is standing "hat in hand" as she speaks with the woman seated. She is looking for approval from the seated woman.

The woman seated: She is the one in charge here. She remains seated and comfortable. Notice her body language shows openness. She just might be open to this younger woman.

Now look at the background. The man standing there is literally facing away from the conversation. Close enough to hear, but far enough not to be involved. He wants no part of this.
He is looking out over his ranch. He would rather be working the cattle, working the horses, anything besides dealing with this new interloper.

The attention to detail is amazing.
