ORLEANS looked great visually, and in a cinematic way that Katzman would never have permitted (except when Bradford May or Robert Jessup managed to slip briefly into the Lorimar studio before being quickly escorted to the door). But the pilot was atrocious. A young, sassy '90s woman is wrapped up in a carpet and tossed off a bridge, and once she's rescued after god knows how much time and untied from her soggy cocoon, she's not only still alive, she's still a sassy '90s young woman who hops right up, sasses the men who'd just rescued her (because they're men, after all) and stomps off into the night --- and I think that was the first scene!
Ugh! I actually thought it was a potentially great new platform for Larry, as this beleaguered, been-there-done-that Louisiana judge. And the locational flavor was palpable... but there was something wrong behind the camera in order for the series to start out that way. The rest of the pilot episode seemed alright-ish, but the introductory scene sent me off and I never came back.
And I couldn't have been the only viewer who reacted that way.

I'm on the road this week, and the hotel where I'm staying runs Walker, Texas Ranger in the evenings. I'm continuing to watch for some more Dallas alums.
Sheree Wilson is completely different. Very relaxed and laughing a lot-- she's very attractive in this series. She didn't have much reason to laugh in Dallas, so it's good to see her in another role.

Thought of a lot more examples! Interesting to note Dallas castmates who worked together before the show or after.
Of course, Barbara Bel Geddes played a fairly large role in Hitchcock’s VERTIGO. She also starred in THE LONG NIGHT (1947) alongside Henry Fonda, and in “Giant” director George Stevens’ I REMEMBER MAMA (1948).
Jim Davis starred alongside Bette Davis in WINTER MEETING (1948).
George Kennedy was of course a fairly big character actor, and starred alongside Priscilla Presley in THE NAKED GUN films, and alongside Morgan Woodward in smaller parts of COOL HAND LUKE.
A few years before Dallas, Victoria Principal played a role alongside Steve Kanaly and Don Starr (Jordan Lee) in director John Huston and writer John Milius’ THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JUDGE ROY BEAN (1972). Kanaly also played a role in Milius’ THE WIND AND THE LION (1975) with Sean Connery.
Howard Keel had a massive career, largely in musicals, before Dallas. A few examples: Oscar-winning ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (1950), SHOW BOAT (1951), TEXAS CARNIVAL (1951), and CALAMITY JANE (1953).
Same thing with Donna Reed. Some of her major roles included starring in the iconic film IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) and FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953).
Something fun — Larry Hagman played a small role in IN HARM’S WAY (1965), as did George Kennedy.
Leigh McCloskey is pretty well known for his role in cult-classic INFERNO (1980).
John Beck played a large role in Woody Allen’s iconic film SLEEPER (1973), and also starred in ROLLERBALL (1975), and THE BIG BUS (1976) — with Hagman in a small role.
Dallas had its fair share of Bond girls — Barbara Carerra (Angelica Nero) was a Bond girl in NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN (1983), and Lois Chiles (Holly Harwood) was a Bond girl in MOONRAKER (1979).
A few more — Deborah Shelton starred in the majorly popular Brian De Palma film BODY DOUBLE (1984), Kimberly Foster in IT TAKES TWO (1988), Priscilla Pointer in CARRIE (1976) and BLUE VELEVET (1986), and Christopher Atkins in THE BLUE LAGOON

I wasn't aware that he had a career before Dallas, after that he at least had one in daytime. He did stints on four soaps: Santa Barbara, General Hospital, The Young and the Restless and One Life to Live. Has anyone watched him in any of the soaps? I only watched Santa Barbara at the time and I liked the fact that he acted differently there than on Dallas.

Donna, of course, had a prominent co-star role for two seasons on PETROCELLI (her later dalliance with Ray was bad enough, but poor old Sam Culver must have really been out of it at his advanced age to have no idea his young bride had a full-on second husband and life!)

So we all know that many of the DALLAS guest stars were on plenty of other things prior to their appearances on the show: old things like GUNSMOKE and BONANZA, or THE BIG VALLEY. Some of them seemed to do a tour of the soaps, appearing on KNOTS LANDING, FALCON CREST, or DYNASTY and THE COLBYS...

There is a scene in Petrocelli where Barry Newman is sitting outside the camper and invites Susan Howard to join him. It's evening, and you can see the tree branches swaying slightly in the breeze.
Petrocelli: Come out and join us
Maggie: Us?
Petrocelli: Me and the crickets
Maggie: Hmm. Smells like a Texas night
Petrocelli: Long ways from Times Square, isn't it?
A small scene, and Leonard Katzman nails the details perfectly. The breeze, the crickets, the sound of the sliding screen door.
You feel like you are really there.
When he pulls off similar scenes in Dallas, it is amazing.

Interesting, I didn't know that Katzman had been the producer on Petrocelli. Lots of pre-Dallas connections. Victoria and Steve worked together on a movie, and so did Patrick and Larry.

In Strong Medicine, based on the novel by Danielle Steel, Patrick Duffy and Pamela Sue Martin's characters got married. I remember when Victoria Principal left Dallas, in the West German press Pamela Sue Martin was speculated as Pam recast and the wedding photo of her and Patrick Duffy in Strong Medicne was printed in magazines as if she was already safe as nuPam. Has Pamela Sue Martin also been speculated as Pam recast in other countries due to her connection to Patrick Duffy in Strong Medicine?

K Callan - the actress, born in 1935 in Dallas, Texas, played April Steven's mother in four episodes of Dallas in 1990. She's still acting. While mostly known for a role in a Emmy award winning episode of All in the Family ("Cousin Liz") in 1977, and as Martha Kent in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-97), she also appeared as Edie Britt's mother in Desperate Housewives' third season-finale.
K Callan co-starred as Lisa Williams (one of Richard Gere's clients) in American Gigolo (1980), as Michelle Pfeiffer's mother in Frankie and Johnny (1991) and appeared as a 84- years old "Great Nana" along 90- year old Christopher Plummer in Knives Out (2019).
This forum often criticized the casting decisions of Dallas's latter seasons. But I think K Callan as April's mother was an excellent choice and Sheree J. Wilson was great in their scenes together.
This week K Callan had a guest-role as Betty along TNT Dallas' Judith Light in the new Peacock streaming series Poker Face by Knives Out's Rian Johnson starring Natasha Lyonne. The actress got her first acting job on television in 1962. Callan is now 87. And look at her face: real wrinkles.

Strong Medicine was based on a novel by Arthur Hailey and the miniseries was broadcast in first-run syndication, not on a major network.
