Frasier to return for a re-boot

The reboot is on SkyShowtime, so I don't know when I'll get to see it. I have no budget for another streaming platform.
Seeing mixed reviews makes the waiting easier though. Not very surprised by mixed reviews though. Few reboots get great reviews. But I assume Kelsey Grammer still is fabulous at playing Frasier.

Like with Dallas TNT, a lot of time has passed. It's unreasonable to expect the same show but any difference will be seen as a negative. For the record, I liked the Murphy Brown revival. I thought they did a good job of recapturing the tone.
The way they went after Quayle in the original was certainly more clever, especially considering he threw the first stone in real life.
In fairness to Quayle, he was lampooned as thinking Murphy Brown was a real person, but his comments were obviously intended as criticism of the producers of a TV show.

TNT Dallas was hurt more by incompetent and lazy writers than the passage of time. Look at the revival of Roseanne/the Conners. Twenty-one years had passed since the original series ended, and yet the revival looks and feels practically the same. Even with Roseanne gone, the tone has remained the same.

Frasier is a complete 180 of that. Different sets, different location, and aside from Grammar, different cast. It feels more like a spin off, even though it's still centered on Frasier. It's a double-edged sword. It's certainly easier to judge it on its own merits, but the nostalgia factor is limited due to all the changes.

I know Murphy Brown was always a liberal, but I don't recall the original show being as highly partisan as the revival.

I got that, but I liked how the show ran with that and made Quayle part of Brown's fictional reality.

Of course, it would have got old quick if every episode that followed had a lame joke at his expense.

Agreed, but not all the changes were unreasonable of themselves.

I wonder if it might not have been better to give it a different title to reduce the temptation for direct comparisons.

I really liked the original show, and it's often on in re-runs when I am at work and I find myself laughing at it when I catch it. I tried last night to watch the new show, and I was even excited about seeing Nicholas Lyndhurst in it. However I didn't even make it through a whole episode, a lot of the new cast are just forgettable and it seemed way less smart and interesting. It seemed very obvious in a way that the old show wasn't, it felt like any other sitcom. I think loosing the original cast is a problem for the show. These shows are all about casting and they had an amazing ensemble. This one, not so much.

I wasn't a regular Frasier watcher but I've seen now the first three episodes of the reboot. I agree with the negative reviews it got. In the failed Murphy Brown reboot at least the dynamic between mother and son was less forced (written). Because they had topics to argue about, but the dysfunctional father-son relationship in Frasier isn't entertaining, it's rather sad to watch two men who are too old for discussions over parental mistakes - especially since we've seen that in the original run on another level.

Yes, that was one of the few redeeming qualities of the Murphy Brown reboot.

Of course, they still had to continue the trend of being so on the nose obvious with Murphy's son working for the "Wolf" network.

Agreed.

Grammer is as accomplished as ever, but the writing is just so inferior to the original show. The pace is sluggish and it actually looks and sounds like the generic mainstream sitcom of the 90s that Frasier contrasted with so brilliantly at the time. Disappointing.

Murphy Brown in its original run had a lot more bite when Bush Sr. was president. When Clinton became president, they didn't lampoon him as much, although they did make some jokes at his expense. So it was a bit partisan then, but not as pronounced as the revival was. Another problem with that revival was that the news cycle had changed a lot, and moved a lot faster than it did in the 80s and 90s. So usually the behavior they decried in the episodes was usually months out of date, and old news by the time the episodes aired.

So I caved and signed up for SkyShowtime with their Black Friday half price deal. I have seen the 3 first episodes of the reboot.

I liked that Kelsey Grammer is just as good as Frasier as always.

Freddy is not as bad as I feared. I don't mind him at all. A bit predictable, but I do like that he's much like Martin making the Martin/Frasier opposites continue in the next generation.

I like that nephew David is a lot like Niles instead of being normal. He could be a little more refined though, but he has Daphne in him too so I guess he must have that side too.

I like the university people too.

The reboot is not as brilliant as Frasier, but I never thought it would be. However, I do enjoy it.

Well, it's been renewed for a season 2.

I was slightly surprised because usually when you don't hear something from these streaming shows within a few weeks it tends to mean its dead, which makes me think that the international performance mattered. I've seen a lot of ads for it here.

I’m yet to watch an episode of the new show. I was watching some episodes of the original show here and there but for some reason I haven’t had enough interest to get into the current one yet.

I don't have Paramount+. Hopefully it will get a run elsewhere at some point, like the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery.

I have never been a FRASIER fan. I thought he was serviceable on CHEERS, especially when he was involved in a love triangle with Sam & Diane, but he could get kind of irksome. My view on CHEERS over time has shuffled to meh.

FRASIER (and, by extension MURPHY BROWN, since we've discussed it here as well) are just too stuffy for my tastes. I don't find either of them particularly funny, the latter being even less funny than the former.

I don't like heavy-handed sitcoms.

With that being said, I personally have zero interest in checking out the FRASIER revival. We have Paramount+ and I've seen the trailers during advertisements, but.... I haven't watched the show.

Who knows, out of extreme curiosity, I just might watch the premiere episode of the revival, but it seems highly unlikely.

I agree with some of your points. I don't think Cheers was as good after Nicholas Colasanto passed and Shelly Long departed,
but Frasier and Lil were good characters.
I don't think a Frasier reboot is interesting at all. It is a show that is best remembered for its original run

Huge losses, and I tend to agree overall, yet there are so many things I love about the later seasons also. I kind of view it as two completely different shows now when I look back on it.

I finally got around to watching a few episodes and it doesn’t have the same feel of the original for me. I wasn’t a huge fan of the original to begin with but I think it’s much better than this one.

I don't have Paramount+ and Frasier is not a strong enough draw to get me to subscribe, but if it ever shows up on free-to-air on a streamer that I do have, then I would definitely be interested in checking it out.

I felt that at the time. I think it was wise not to try to just give Sam another love interest, especially a Diane clone. It became much more of an ensemble rather than largely a two-hander.
