Meeting the Colbys at home

I have seen every episode of Dynasty but in order to see the further adventures of Sable & co I had to break down and buy the DVD set. My initial thoughts are as such.

Jeff seems much refreshed in this new setting as the season where Fallon was ostensibly dead was miserable for him as a stood over her grave and hooked with a series of non-entties. Hilarious how in her first appearance Bliss moons over her cousin being sexy yet unavailable. How does she know. I mean, you are double first cousins but this is also Dynasty-land. Only your father would be truly off limits

Miles married a woman with amnesia and no one hints at the ethics of such a situation?

The conflict between Sable and Constance is interesting but I think Stanwyk is trying elevate the show to a better level of trash.

The weird chemistry between Jeff and Monica predated season 9 of DYNASTY

During the set up of The Colbys on season 6 of DYNASTY, when Blake and Jason first meet it's said they haven't really met for about 20 years. Then later it's implied that they actually have met in between that. Blake describes the whole Colby family to Krystle/Rita in detail. How does he know all this if its been 20 years. It's a bit all over the place. When Connie dances with Blake she talks about the good old times they all used to have and mentions Ben. So Connie can remember Ben, who was Blake's brother and Alexis' brother in law. Connie knows her own sister in law Sable is Alexis' cousin, but nobody recognises Fallon. Nobody!

It doesn't matter what happens to Fallon or how she feels, as long as Miles and Sable get what they want. The villains!

I don't consider Miles and Sable villains but they are more in the grey area than, say, wait, I can't think of anyone not shady on this show! :eck: Never mind.

Anyway, Fallon was just a prop for the Colby family and the show. I think the show's doom as a spin-0ff was inbuilt because for DYNASTY viewers to want to try a spin-0ff, you want to lure them in with established characters, but Fallon was neither the same actress nor the same character.

But back to Miles and Sable, I never saw them as, say, Adam and Alexis. Miles and Adam did both rape a woman, but Miles did not mix toxic compounds or try to get his mother to take the fall. What was more interesting to me was the Oedipal tones their scenes together had.

That was my thinking, too--no one in Jeff's extended family knew what Fallon looked like. I know I am only three episodes in, but so far Miles doesn't have much presence as anything other than a mannequin. Like why should I root for him as opposed to Jeff, who I've known for years

I didn't care about anyone being with Fallon on The Colbys. It was a sub plot as far as I was concerned. lol I liked Miles a whole better with Channing. I loved Channing, and I was ok with Jeff and Fallon quietly sneaking back to Denver when The Colbys got axed. Miles should have been in at least one episode of season 9 of DYNASTY though.

I think if it had been Jeff of seasons 1-2, it would have been no contest. But Jeff became more of a jerk (he always was a bit of a jerk) through his storyline with Kirby and his constant ass-kissing of Blake in the antagonism with Adam.
When I first started watching THE COLBYS it was painful because of the laughable plots (and plot holes), but I was drawn by the "well, I have to find out what happens with Fallon and Jeff" element. I was probably also not drawn to Miles (hot as he was) at first as far as I remember. It was more that Jeff became the new favored Prince for whom the established Prince was cast aside, even though the new jerky Prince already had another kingdom in Denver--that kind of development gradually drew me closer to Miles and further away from Jeff. Jason's Hestonian demeanor helped Jeff's case not one bit. And then came Frankie, and the die was cast.

On principle, I agree. And yet as I wrote on another thread...

I have almost finished re-watching DYNASTY season 3 after re-watching the first two seasons as well on CBS Drama. I kinda always had that impression, but now that my memory has been assisted by the repeats, it is obvious there was never any love there on DYNASTY. When Fallon wants to divorce Jeff, she cries out to Blake "daddy you have to let me out of this marriage,” stating that making Blake happy is the only reason she has not divorced him yet—as if she is in a 19th century novel. When they do divorce, she tells him that he is a great guy that she just can’t go for “probably unluckily for me.” They agree to stay friends because “that is what they started as” and “should never have gotten married.” But, they also agree that they got LB out of this, which is good. Theirs was going to be a friendly divorce, unlike the Blake-Alexis divorce from hell, because there were no unresolved feelings and leftover passion disguised as hate—it was a one-sided infatuation that she let turn into a marriage and that lasted longer than it should have just to please her father. I don’t think that had Pamela Sue Martin NOT told them season 4 would be her last they would have her get engaged and almost married to Jeff at the end of the season to create a cliffhanger. It was just a soap trope to have her leave in limbo.

Now, I know this is irrelevant to THE COLBYS because there Jeff and Fallon were some kinda star-crossed lovers, but even for that rewrite to work they had to be adored by the audience, and I doubt that were the case even by COLBYS fans. I have argued in another thread that based on who Fallon was on DYNASTY, having her leave Jeff for Miles made all the sense. Lauren being Miles’ would have helped that even more.

Fallon just doesn't even get that much screen time or story once the Sable/Jason/Frankie stuff heats up. It's like, yea ok... more Sable please.

It's fascinating that they pretty much built a spinoff around a recast. I mean Knots Landing but at least Valene had been a presence whereas Emma Samms was just kind of dumped into being a portrait over the fireplace and some version of Fallon who was far removed from the original

But we can't compare Knots, which was Jacobs original brain child even before Dallas, and therefore a creator's vision, to the Dynasty spin-off, which was built around Esther Shapiro's desire for more tie-in merchandising and profits and ABC's desire to prop up its weak lineup ratings-wise.
