Meeting the Colbys at home

He wasn't exactly walking around with a pot of gold at the time Gary and Valene broke up.
He was a Ewing! Some sluts are clever. It didn't matter what exact change he had in his wallet or that he was living in suburbia with Val. Gary was the rainbow that lead her to a pot of gold.

When I did my rewatch thread a few years ago I remember not being too wowed by its first two episodes, but in episode 3 something "clicked" with me, and from there on it never failed to entertain me

Well, you also used to defend the Gillieathon and frequently said that you were enjoying it (especially binge watching it) and they knew exactly what they were doing as a "show." And then you saw the light. So, there is always hope! ;)

I love The Colbys. I just see it differently. I don't think my version came with the same 3D specs as willies.

Yes, she was clever. She knew exactly what she wanted and went for it. Alexis and Adam lashed out for personal, emotional reasons. And I liked that too, maybe even more.
If one day I just started a "Leave Frankie Alone!" campaign.
There's already an appreciation thread, thank you very kindly :)

I was in the process of trying to figure what NuDynasty was all about, and I've done everything I could to justify it, and sometimes I felt I "got it". It took me two whole seasons to realize that I will never "get it", hence why I won't bother with season 3.
That's not the same as being somewhat underwhelmed by the first two episodes. But you already knew that.
But I find your "throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks" approach very amusing :)

I aim to please.
I suggested that you would see the light in general. I did not suggest that seeing those two episodes differently was that process. I choose to have hope in you even when you don't :D. But you also already knew that, but it was an easier refutation for you to make.

I know that there are members on the forum who like the show--there are also members of the forum who like seasons of DYNASTY I do not like, despite my loving the show in general, and vice versa. But I know myself enough to know that I can be objective about something despite my personal feelings. Otherwise I would not have found Sable interesting even on season 1, I would not have seen the improvement in season 2, and I would not have enjoyed the Philip twist(s) in the same season. But when I compare the show's premiere season with DYNASTY's premiere season, I am beyond disappointed. It is not just the writing, but the ludicrous plots are a big part. I won't discuss them here so as not to spoil them, but I have discussed them extensively elsewhere.

The best of The Colbys is never going to beat the best of Dynasty.
But the worst of Dynasty is worse than the worst of The Colbys imho.
Like I said, The Colbys had to overcome quite a few disadvantages: the Fallon recast, the soap fatigue (hadn't we seen it all in Dynasty), the family background that had to be retroactively rewritten into the Dynasty universe. It wasn't pretty.
But somehow, magically, they managed to turn it into decent soap opera with its own unique dynamics, good cinematography and some cool characters. And it could be very funny sometimes, because of the old-fashioned over-the-top melodrama.

I guess if you could make it through Moldavia and the mess that was early season six, the plot holes in the Colbys might not bother you. But did anyone bother to tell the psychiatrist that Fallon had undergone severe head trauma prior to her flight from Denver--or were they were too committed to the incest fantasy to work the fractured skull angle into the storyline of the new show?

They mostly didn't me, because enough was said in the first episode for me to know the timeline was different and events altered. I took the show in that spirit. There is no seamless continuation from Dynasty (or even back to it). Eg: On Dynasty, the doctor who met Jason gave him his second opinion, and told him of third and fourth opinions. On The Colbys Jason is waiting to hear a second opinion. On Dynasty, Colby Enterprises is a company jointly founded by Connie & Jason, equally shared by them. On TC, it's an inherited company. The way Fallon's spaceship experiences on Dynasty in S8 were written up, and other things, it's like everything that happened on TC never was the reality, just Fallon's fantasy. Meeting the Colbys at home is like meeting the Colbys in Neverland.

Just not in the same universe. Like Philip and Fallon. Was Jeff in the twilight zone when he was at both their graves?

Well, with Fallon there was a lot of conjecture, and with Philip he died in Vietnam, so maybe they never had a body to bury. His decades long disappearance was harder to swallow than his being presumed dead.

DALLAS did a similar MIA story with Miss Ellie's brother, though I can't remember offhand why he stayed away for so long....and our daytime soaps had a spate of Vietnam influenced stories from the late 80s in to the early 90s, presumed dead relatives being found and Eurasian children showing up

The explanation that Philp died before he could inherit his part of the fortune and Sessil had to become Jeff's caretaker. Did Philip lie about his age to get in the military. Because surely Jeff was like 30 when Dynasty started.

Had Amanda shown up on Dynasty prior to Fallon's burial. When Little Blake stares into the grave and looks homicidal

I think Jeff is actually about 25 when Dynasty started. Jeff and Fallon are only in their 30s towards the end of the run of the show.
