The anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, pro-creationist DUP has now said it will prop up the Tories in order to form a government.

Sources initially suggested that Theresa May had the unofficial backing of the DUP – a socially conservative, pro-Brexit Northern Irish party.

One highlight for me last night was seeing Theresa May at the count in her constituency. She looked as if she had been crying and in her acceptance speech, her voice cracked with emotion at one point at the realisation that she had lead her party to failure. I hope that when the tears ran down her face she thought of all the people in Britain that she has reduced to tears by her cruel policies, such as that young woman who tearfully asked her a question on the BBC Leaders Question Time about how the government had taken away her Disability Living Allowance that she was getting for a mental illness and which exacerbated her condition and she wasn't able to access treatment on the NHS.

Another highlight was seeing Nick Clegg losing his seat. Clegg was the enabler of the Cameron government in 2010 and without him we wouldn't have had those 5 years of austerity that destroyed the lives of so many people while he happily voted for tax cuts for the rich. Clegg's decision to get into bed with Cameron was out of personal ambition rather than what was best for the country and it started a chain reaction that ultimately lead to Brexit.

My final highlight in a night of great moments was when Jeremy Corbyn went to his count and was cheered by the crowds like a rock star. His decision to run on a true socialist manifesto really connected with voters and he was completely vindicated as he increased the party's share of the vote by more than any party leader since Atlee.

The loss of Theresa May's majority is all the sweeter because she didn't have to call the election but her arrogance convinced her she couldn't roll over the Labour Party but she didn't count on the voters seeing through her lies and smears to see that Jeremy Corbyn was a honest and decent man that the public warmed to.

It looks like UKIP is all but dead and hard Brexit is all but dead so we should rejoice in that news and thank Mrs May for her shooting her party in the foot by calling the election.

The Democratic Unionist Party is the biggest unionist party in Northern Ireland – that is, it is against Ulster becoming part of the Republic of Ireland.

They’ve effectively just replaced the Ulster Unionists (UUP) – but the two parties are anything but the same.

While the UUP is a relatively harmless centre-right party that has had a long-running relationship with the Tories, the DUP is far more conservative, particularly when it comes to social issues.

Here’s what you need to know about the Northern Irish party that is now within throwing distance of Westminster.

LINKS TO TERRORISM

Disturbingly, the party has strong historical links to Loyalist paramilitary groups – in particular the terrorist group Ulster Resistance, which was founded by people who ended up becoming prominent DUP politicians. The party’s former leader Peter Robinson, for example, was an active member of the terror group.

The group also collaborated with other terror groups, including the Ulster Volunteer Force, to smuggle deadly arms into the UK.

Although the party has since rescinded violence, this may seem a bit of a rich move from a party that attacked Jeremy Corbyn for his alleged links to former Northern Irish terrorists.

WOMEN’S RIGHTS – OR A LACK OF THEM

The DUP is notorious for being strongly opposed to reproductive choice – specifically a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion. This makes them the biggest anti-abortion party in the country.

This is why women in Northern Ireland either face a costly and incredibly stressful journey to England and Scotland to have an abortion, or are forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term.

SAME SEX MARRIAGE

The DUP are also known for strongly opposing same sex marriage. As a result, Northern Ireland still doesn’t have equal marriage – unlike all of its neighbours Scotland, England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

ACCUSATIONS OF RACISM

Last year, DUP MP Sammy Wilson was accused of racism after a member of the public said Northern Ireland should ‘get the ethnics out’ – to which he appeared to reply ‘you are absolutely right’.

CREATIONISM

The DUP is also infamous for pushing for creationism to be taught in schools on a par with proven scientific facts. Creationsim is the evangelical belief that Darwin’s theory of evolution is incorrect, and that humans were created whole in God’s image.

BREXIT

The party is pro-Brexit and backed the Leave campaign before the EU referendum last year.

Either you misread my comment, or I wasn't clear enough.

I said I was confused by who is voting.

I didn't believe the country would have voted on Brexit, I didn't believe we would have had that many xenophobe people living in this country. I don't understand why so many people want out and why so many people would vote a president like Trump. I'm aware that many people think their vote won't count and therefore don't vote, but that's not what I was referring to.

I always thought that Britain would vote for Brexit because in the last elections for the European Parliament UKIP won the most votes and seats and there are loads of xenophobes and racists in the UK. I recall seeing a recent British Social Attitudes Survey in which a third of people said they were prejudice against other races and that was only those that admitted to it.

There are 650 seats in the UK Parliament so to get a majority you need to wing 326. Theresa May's Party only one 318 seats, which although more than any other single party won wasn't more than all the other parties combined.

Theresa May has no shame. She would do a deal with the devil if it would keep her in power and joining with the DUP is effectively doing that.

I have to say I wasn't optimistic at all. I've lost so much faith with the British public in recent times and even with the rumours I didn't think it would be possible. There was a little hope with me after the recent Terror Attacks and all the talk around May's cutbacks within the Police Force.

I take a different view. I think the terror attacks helped the Tories and without them Labour might have been the largest party. Up until the London Bridge attack, Labour were steadily going up in the polls every week but after it their progress stalled. The terrorist attacks allowed the Tories to repeat the lie that Jeremy Corbyn supported the IRA when in reality he consistently condemned the murders the IRA carried out. Labour did well to mitigate the damage by drawing attention to Tory police cuts.

I never saw any of this, which makes me wonder how the news is spread. The News Channel I regularly watch is BBC and there was so much focus on the attack itself, that I either missed this point, or they didn't discuss/highlight this. What I saw up here was people getting angry at the police cuts and May repeatedly saying that the police had enough power, that then lead to more coverage over this topic and it was also covered how angry people were that May wouldn't take part in the televised debates.

Northern Ireland have been without a government since January. How can the UK government remain unbiased when negotiating a way forward in the impasse when the DUP are pulling their strings? It's a marriage made in hell and potentially could cause major problems for the Northern Ireland Peace Agreement.

While I was never going to be May's #1 fan, I've found her tolerable for most of the past year. To me, she certainly seemed to be the best of a bad bunch compared with creepy running mates Liam Fox, Stephen Crabb and Andrea Loathsome.

With this morning's events I feel she's sold the entire country out.

Maybe it was because I live in what was a Tory target seat because every time I logged onto YouTube or Facebook I was subjected to videos smearing Jeremy Corbyn over his past meetings with Sinn Fein implying they were because he supported the IRA and not because he was trying to start a dialogue between the parties at dispute. There was no mention of the fact that he also met with Unionist leaders during this time.
