Was The Colbys a flop?

Oh... Drama! Fist fight between Jason & Philip.

Frankie watches, cries and say nothing while Sable screams and asks Jason to stop. Of course, he doesn't, because...

I really don't know how Dynasty and The Colbys manage to always cast the most (worst) obvious body doubles.

If they think this man looks like Charlton Heston, no wonder why they did cast Emma Samms as a Pamela Sue Martin look alike :D

And without the annoying french voices changes (Jeff & Miles) :D
Anyway, thank you for those last two, at least I will finish the series with a glorious 480p dvd rip image.

Sure it was great finale. Some points :
- Frankie wants to let herself die in the sea. Jeff saves her. At the end of the episode, she has a car accident. But she's till not dead yet. The writers can't kill her. I guess the cancellation of the show was the only efficient way to get rid of the character :D
- Strange lights in the night, anonymous phone calls : yeah, that's the way aliens warn you they're coming for you. By the way, I would like to thank those aliens for taking "fake Fallon" away from The Colbys, just to bring back to the real Fallon to Denver. Great job! #Aliens2020
- I love Sable so much. I mean, she always do bad things, but she always do that for the good of the ones she loves. I know Sable is in pain to see Monica so sad. But kidnapping your grandson... What was she thinking lol? Well, I guess she threw him out of the window and let him rot on the highway, as he was never mentioned in Dynasty season 9.
- No Bliss, no miss...
- I just missed seing Kolya in his revealing swimsuit. By the way, I just look at Adrian Paul recent photos. He's nicely growing older.

Some Dynasty points now :
- In Dynasty early years, Jeff was almost an orphan, with just Cecil as a family. I didn't buy that Jeff had this big family in California at the time.Then... I just realize that when he came back to Denver with season 8, it was like his all family ceased to exist. Again. I guess Jeff is just like his mother : far from the eyes, far from the heart. Yeah, and he's also a whore, sleeping with almost everyone in Denver. You can't deny your DNA can't you?

- Was Joan Collins right? With the cancellation of The Colbys, Dynasty finally got better, especially with season 9. Just kidding, i know it was all David Paulsen (and had nothing to do with the cancellation of the spin-off)

And what's your overall impression of season 2, @thomaswak?

It was a fun ride actually. It was not Dynasty season 9 level, but it was quite enjoyable. I mean more enjoyable than many Dynasty season 6 & 7 episodes.

I confirm, Stephanie Beacham was gold. Her character stole the show, and Charlton Heston's Jason was nothing in comparison. I mean from a charismatic standpoint.

The Kolya storyline was good for Bliss. The first part actually. When he's free and becomes a USA resident, the poor guy is stuck in that cliché storyline : the woman who wants him, and tries to do everything to ruin his relation with Bliss.

Season 2 also helped me to understand all that "hate" for Frankie. Was I biased? Surely. But it was fun to roll eyes to her character, till the very last episode. I don' even understand what she wants in the last two episodes. Is she unbalanced or schizophrenic?

Monica was great too. She had a secret child with Lucas, she thinks he doesn't know, Constance made him adopt his own child and Monica was kinda the last to know. I loved the fact I didn't see that coming lol.

I already knew who the mystery character was (Philip) and I'm not crazy about the actor, and I never bought him as a Colby. Bad casting maybe...

"Fallon" was annoying almost all season.

Channing was a great addition! She was a better Fallon than Fallon.

Miles was consistent, with some little character growth. I liked him better this season. Or maybe I am older, and now I enjoy him more.

In retrospect, a colossal error on the part of the show in season 3. I am sure I have 87 posts on this already, but reducing the Colby Dynasty to just Jeff with the death of Cecil was beyond short-sighted. Imagine if back then we suddenly had Constance descend to challenge Alexis as a co-heir. And Sable to visit her dear cousin.

Of course she was. :D
Yes, season 9 is much more focused unlike previous seasons, but DYNASTY is a much more coherent show also in season 8. I don't think it is that any amazing talent shift back to the original show happened, but that the spin-off's cancellation and the new, later and worse timeslot finally scared the execs to realize they better shape up or else. A trimmed 22-episode season and consistent, season-long arcs helped.
As for the Colbys in season 9, it is mixed bag. I loved Sable and Monica on the show, and the way tensions from the spin off were still present (Jeff and Sable). But the twins retcon was just...blah.

Yes. The twins retcon was forced. Especially the so called "reaction" of Jason to it. I mean, Jason, ignoring Miles & Monica because they weren't his??? I claim it : out of character.
Especially with season 2, when Jason explains to Miles that an adopted child would be no less his child (When Miles was refusing to the idea of adopting a kid, when he found out Channing couldn't get pregnant)

Are you're sure about Lucas ?

I do agree. Especially if David Paulsen really planned that Cecil was the father.

Damn. I mixing up names again. I meant Cash. But who knows? In the Colbyverse, everything can happen lol (who said spaceship? Who?!)

You're right, he wasn't mentioned. Not by name.
An amnestic Jeff, who'd inherited his wealth from his aunt Connie and grew up in Denver apparently in the same household as Jason's kids with grandpa Colby around, did enquire of Monica: "Your boy?"
Cash was equally a known-of stranger to him: "The senator?"
Seems to me this D.S9 Jeff hasn't known a real job at Colby Enterprises, lol.

But... if he just mentioned the names it could have been difficult for an audience who never watched TC to figure out who those names belonged to and in what relation they were to Monica. With "your boy" you know exactly he was talking about her son. They did the same thing with Frankie, she was "just" Sables' sister. I think it was intentional they called them that way.

Maybe. Did Jeff or Monica mention that "the Senator" was the boy's father? I've forgotten. Likewise, did S9 establish for Dynasty-only viewers that Jeff was Sable's blood nephew? Not just her ex-stepson? Because I don't think D.S6-8 established that Francesca -- previously established as the remarried widow of Philip Colby -- was also the sister of Jason's wife. D.S8 had Jeff mentioning his nameless father wanting something in connection with the pipeline with no explanation for the non-TC viewers how Jason came to be his father. I don't even know whether Philip is even meant to be alive off-screen on Dynasty in the latter seasons. It's either lazy writing or some deliberate reason to omit explanations that's unknown to us. I'm thinking legal reasons, remembering that the actors doing crossovers, ostensibly playing the same characters, still needed separate contracts to appear on each other's show. Maybe the shows were forbidden to use the same storylines.

Scratch that. I now recall Alexis saying Jason had thrown Sable over for her sister. Then Jeff saying Sable had never forgiven Jason for running off with his mother.

Surely it wouldn't matter if the characters were created by the Shapiros and the pollocks. And especially if the characters were first established on Dynasty. If Dynasty mentions the characters first then they are essentially Dynasty characters? As far as I am aware the Colby family was created by the Shapiros and Pollocks, not by Huson and Bast or other hired writers. And wouldn't the Shapiros own the rights to those characters if The Colbys was an idea that they pitched to ABC and was spun from their creation Dynasty?

These parent/spin-off inconsistencies have never bothered me whatsoever.
I didn't like the twin retcon simply because I didn't like it, certainly not the way it was casually mentioned by that audacious woman.
But I could see it as a big THE COLBYS season 3 storyline, especially if it would involve Cecil. We needed to know more about Cecil anyway, and Sable needed another reason to defend her pups (mostly Miles) because that dynamic really worked for The Colbys.
Everything would go terribly wrong and Miles wouldn't be wearing many clothes and we all would be very happy and post in the Was The Colbys The Best Thing On TV thread.
Life would be perfect just because I say so.

Which leads me to this question: was it said on D.S9 that Jason was travelling the world with Frankie? I've read that claim more than once. Someone even said that Jason and Frankie were married. He seemed to be saying Jsason wasn't at the marital home he'd shared with Sable.

I recall Jeff telling Blake that Jason's office said he was out of town, but don't recall the rest.
I seem to recall Monica saying it was just her and Jason at home. True?
When Jeff mentioned Jason running off with his mother, my mind went to what happened on TC and the reason for that running off -- which to my mind was to accomplish something, then return home. But can we assume that that's the event S9 Jeff was referring to? Because a non TC viewer might think "running off" was a more recent, permanent event. Ie, Jason had left the marital home for good. Not realising that it was the Colby family estate. This guy who claimed Jason and Frankie were married was telling someone what had happened to Frankie after The Colby's finale, based on D.S9.

I don't know. Like I don't know why the actors needed seperate contracts if they were playing the same characters. The Garret Boydston actor was drawing two weekly salaries for christsakes.
