Was The Colbys a flop?

I don't know. Like I don't know why the actors needed seperate contracts if they were playing the same characters. The Garret Boydston actor was drawing two weekly salaries for christsakes.
Because although it's the same character it's a different acting gig. It's a different production by the same studio/network. The rights would be held by the creators though. Or the creators and ABC jointly probably, but I would imagine that Dynasty could use anything that was first mentioned on it in any way they wanted. And Blake gives a rundown of the Colby family in season 6 to Rita. So those characters are all Dynasty characters first.

We can chose to live with the inconsistencies if we've watched both shows. But folk who haven't obviously have a different interpretation.

Well until I had seen The Colbys I had just assumed that Alexis and Sable's feud was born out of Alexis being devious and sleeping with Jason or lying about it to bother Sable. It isn't beyond her or a stretch to think that considering what she did to Krystle. I didn't like Jeff as a character anyway most of the time so I didn't care about his hardly talked about off screen family in California. Again not an unusual thing in a soap. Then when I finally did get to see all of The Colbys these things seemed rather insignificant when presented with the fact that none of the Colby family recognised their cousin Fallon and stood in silence when Miles presented her as his new wife. I mean, if you are going to talk about inconsistencies.

Also nothing prepared me for the horror of Frankie.

But not Hutch, Channing, Scott, Cash, Adriene, right? And not Zach either. Nor Jason's grandfather, Lucas, house help, etc.

They would be the property of the creators of the show. In this case the Shapiros. As the Shapiros created Dynasty and The Colbys they could have any characters cross between shows if the actors agreed to do so. If an actor was hired for Dynasty only they wouldn't have to make cross over appearances on The Colbys but they could if they wanted to. If The Colbys had went on, possible future contracts could have added that cross overs may be required, or negotiations with actors could have taken place.

Individual writers would be hired to work on The Colbys and of course they would create new characters but those characters would be the property of the show's original creators and the production company I would imagine.

The Colby family, aside from Jeff, was created by Huson and Bast who were credited as "developers". So they were given some money each time one of their characters did a cross-over in "Dynasty". See there : https://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/c8vd7432/dsc/#ref49
Box 12, Folders 2-3
Dispute 1985-1989
Contains material regarding payment for Colbys characters "spun back" to Dynasty.
Developing a show isn't the same as creating a show though is it? Wasn't Cynthia Cidre credited as developing a show, created by David Jacobs when she did TNT Dallas? I could have sworn that season 1 of The Colbys was created by The Shapiros and The Pollocks, but it's a while since I have watched and seen the actual credits.

Edit - On IMdB The Colbys creators are listed as Huson, Bast and Eileen Pollock and three other credits I cant see. Which I imagine would be Robert Pollock and Richard and Esther Shapiro.

Actually I was right here is a better break down. The Pollocks and Shapiros created The Colbys and Huson and Bast developed their idea and initial characters.

These parent/spin-off inconsistencies have never bothered me whatsoever.

I do not consider them important either, because DYNASTY was wildly inconsistent about its own history from season to season (ergo the "Continuity errors" thread).

Actually I was right here is a better break down. The Pollocks and Shapiros created The Colbys and Huson and Bast developed their idea and initial characters.

Yes, it was created by the Shapiros and the Pollocks--i.e. the characters, the relations between them and the DYNASTY characters, and the bible for the first season was written in very broad strokes by the Pollocks. The Pollocks were also supervising producers, with Huson and Bast listed as producers. I believe Huson and Bast developed each episode breakdown (together with the individual writers who are never credited on any show) and also edited the dialogue, which is more attuned to the characters in THE COLBYS than it was on DYNASTY at the time.

Yes, it was always my understanding that The Colbys universe existed broadly before it was brought to Huson and Bast who more or less embellished and expanded on what the Shapiros and Pollocks presented to them.

Yes and no. The Colbys was created by the Shapiros and the Pollocks but the bibles of both seasons were written soly by Bast and Huson. Basically, the only idea that the Shapiros and the Pollocks had was to send Jeff and Fallon in California with a Colby family.

William Bast confirmed it here : http://dynastie.wifeo.com/interviews4.php
"We created the characters, except those that crossed over from Dynasty."

How on earth do you find these things? I wouldn't even know what to search for on Google.
I do look for these things from time to time. It's how I managed to get very interesting documents (like the bibles of both seasons of "the Colbys" and bibles for seasons 3, 5, 6 and 7 of "Dynasty" + several documents on the retooling of season 6). :)

But almost the entire Colby family crossed over from DYNASTY. Miles, Monica, Jason, Sable, Connie and possibly Bliss, I cant recall. As well as Garret Boydston all first appeared on DYNASTY. Huson and Bast had nothing to do with that. They were presented these characters after they were already created by the shapiros and the pollocks.

The Colbys was very much a fully formed idea and not a basic outline before Huson and Bast were given creative control. It existed inside the DYNASTY universe first, it was given life on Dynasty.

The original Colbys family was created by the Pollocks and Shapiros, as were some plots. I remember one being Jeff getting the shares and Jeff eventually being Jason's. Eileen Pollock discussed that back in the 80s, but she did say that she just gave rough ideas to the Colbys writers. I am sure Huson and Bast fleshed out the bible and the remaining stories. The Shapiros/Pollocks' involvement with story did not continue past the creation and set-up, but the Pollocks did stay on as supervising producers.

I actually tried that some time ago for like a whole afternoon, out of curiosity. Installing that Tor-Browser was a little complicated already, but i could not even find a proper search engine there, where i could type in things like .. drugs ... or guns... you know. The pages on there have no names, just numbers and you have to know that number to get on that page and i didn't know how to find those numbers either ... so i gave it up. Maybe it was for the best. :D

You've been saved from a life of crime because of not knowing the numbers. See I always knew maths was evil and should be stopped. Maths leads to crime!

He was talking about Jeff and the Carringtons. Jason, Sable and co were their creations even though they first appeared in "Dynasty". The characters are developped on several pages on their bible for season 1 (for instance, it is stated that Sabella is Sable's real name - even though only Zach Powers called her like that on the show - and that she and Frankie were born in San Francisco). The Colbys are barely mentioned (if not mentioned at all) in the bible of the 6th season of Dynasty written by Diana Gould.

Yes, they drafted some ideas about of how Jeff could be involved in the spin-off but that's all. But, as you said, they were also supervising producers which mean that they were available for Bast and Huson if they need their help.

I don't see how The Colbys could have the Shapiros and Pollocks listed as the creators of the show and have them not create the core characters. Especially when they first appeared on Dynasty which was also a show which was created by them. And as it states, Huson and Bast developed their ideas. I am sure they brought Huson and Bast the Colby family at least. Otherwise how did the Shapiros pitch the show to ABC? Jeff and Fallon move to California isn't much of a pitch unless they have a family already set up to move to. They would have pitched the show to ABC before the hiring of Huson and Bast. I refuse to believe that the Shapiros and Pollocks didn't create those characters. Clearly Huson and Bast wrote the bible but they would have been handed those characters even if it wasn't officially documented as so.

Ok but why would were they given some money for "Colbys characters spun back to Dynasty" if they did not create them ?

I don't see how The Colbys could have the Shapiros and Pollocks listed as the creators of the show and have them not create the core characters.
Because the created the concept. The Pollock were not listed as creators of Dynasty and yet they created several main characters for instance (mainly Alexis and Adam).
