Following my relentless pursuit of non-commercial films from the 70s and the 80s, this week I watched "The Boost", aka the movie that inspired "Fatal Attraction" (which is false, because this one was released the previous year!), aka the one whose behind-the-scenes facts were more talked about than the movie itself. You know, James Woods started an extramarital affair with Sean Young, then he tried to end it (once the filming was finished I think), and Sean was not "excited" about it. Urban legend says that she began stalking him and threatening to kill him and herself, blablabla... Young has talked about it in one of her TV biographies, and her version is different, of course.
The movie is quite interesting though not as bold as it probably was back then. Basically, it´s "Days of Wine and Roses" with coke (non-Cola!) instead of wine. Both actors are terrific and have a very old-fashioned onscreen chemistry, which I find amazing given the circumstances. The budget was low but Sean has a wonderful wardrobe, and there is only one shot actually filmed in N.Y.C. (and you can see it in the trailer below, which also presents the last scene, talk about spoilers!!!). If you like the actors, they are fatally attractive here (oops, sorry).

Best of all was that I knew absolutely nothing about the film going in. So every turn surprised me. And I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

Prom Night (1980)
It's many years since I last watched it and it's far better than I remembered. A whole lot more plot and mostly fairly tastefully done. And I'd misremembered the identity of the killer, which was a plus.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
My fondness for this one goes back to a fun time when I was just discovering slasher films and I watched this one a heck of a lot. As with Prom Night, it's quite some years since I've watched, and I think I enjoyed it more because of that.
I'm fond enough of this that I can overlook most of the gaping plot holes and cliches. Though once I noticed it I did struggle to make peace with Jennifer Love Hewitt's penchant for beginning sentences with "OK" à la Richard Osman.

Another one with fond memories of watching at the cinema.
It seems to get a lot of derision, even by the standards of other slashers. A little too much, I think. It's far from great, but an enjoyable enough ride.

Believe it or not, yesterday I watched this:
It´s all of it on YouTube. I´d always known the existence of this dark lady, but after bumping into a couple of interviews of Ms. Peterson, I started getting curious... It´s a whole phenomenon, and an act of artistic "freedom". She Anjelica Huston ain´t, but I had a lot of fun with this mega-trashy movie! The ending must be seen to be believed! Happy Halloween!! (Dwayne from "Falcon Crest" is in this, by the way!)

Prom Night (2008)
I previously watched this some years ago, but I couldn't remember a darned thing about it.
Watching it so close to the 1980 Prom Night, it's clear it's a completely different film to the original. The only thing they have in common are being slashers set on Prom Night. Which is far preferable to a straight remake.
While it wasn't earth-shattering, it looked good and had the typical Neal H. Moritz shadows and gloss thing going on. Most of the characters were one-dimensional, and it felt very teeny, but the lead was engaging enough. There's something I find most enjoyable about these PG-13 slashers. In aiming for a wider audience the tedious gore is eliminated and the focus ends up on suspense, which I find far more effective.
It also had an enjoyable quip from one of the girls about her date:

Friday The 13th (1980)

There's no real suspense, little intensity and only low level feeling of unease. And the death set pieces lose their potency after the first watch so the viewer ends up watching them with detached half interest.
It is fun, though. The scenery - from the small New Jersey township to the young people in swimwear - is attractive. Harry Manfredini's music - with its iconic "ki ki ki ma ma ma" motif - creates a nice atmosphere, as does the storm raging outside while the counsellors are getting cosy inside. Betsy Palmer - when she finally appears - elevates the film by giving it meaning and a degree of truth. And the film's one big jump - even when I know it's coming - gets me every time.

Aren't they just?
What I like is that they still sell the same film. They just do it in a different way. So there's no lie in there, apart from the score (the blurb on YouTube tells me the music in the F13 trailer is from the 2019 adaption of Pet Semetary).
I'd be curious to know if any new viewers have found older films off the back of some of these trailers.

April Fool's Day (2008)
I couldn't remember watching this one (even though I have) and thought it'd be worth another spin in case it's a hidden gem.
It is not. It's utter dross. And not even entertaining dross. I haven't seen the original version, but it has to be better than this.
