That would certainly have been better than what we go
I didn’t think about it at the time. But looking back this would have been the perfect way for the plot to develop. Clayton could have died from a heart attack while he & Miss Ellie were traveling. Then when she returned they’d have a flashback to their final talk we never saw. Where he said to her, “Ellie, you know it’s me but I have to go. The boys will never believe me. It’s a testament to how much they loved me”. Then he gives her space to grieve Clayton & they gradually. I’ve played out a poignant scene many times of where he yells at the boys & tells them things about their childhood only their father would know. Then they both realize it is Jock. Dallas could have ended with the Ewings winning back Ewing Oil. And having somewhat of a family presence again

What if...

Jock was Cliff's biological Father
and Digger was JR's biological Father

Sounds like bad fan fiction, but maybe it was at least discussed by te showrunners.

It surprised me how J.R. was so much against Wes being Jock considering how he felt about Clayton. One would think he would be all for it or at the very least be open to it without dismissing Wes so easily. I think what they should’ve done was have J.R. and Bobby on opposite ends of the Wes debate to further the drama. The ending could’ve stayed the same but I like the tension of the boys disagreeing on if he was indeed their daddy.

Having Clayton as a stepfather he could ignore and disparage was quite a different thing, but it might have been interesting if JR had found a reason to pretend to accept Wes because he saw some advantage in it - at least for the short term.

At that point, JR had "kinda" come to terms with Clayton being his mother's husband. But JR nor Bobby was going to just accept a man who looks nothing like their father to just come in and say "your daddy's back."

That could have been great. JR and Bobby on opposite sides with Ray probably leaning toward believing he was Jock.
I wish that Wes was Jock, that should have been the direction.
However, I can never understand writing a Jock return as mysterious.
Jock Ewing would have said who he was, that this is his SF, and kicked out that outsider/ interloper Clayton, as should be

It rang true to JE's character to me that he would reject Wes right off the bat. He had grieved Jock and come to terms with his death. He had adjusted to life without Jock at both Southfork and at Ewing Oil. He loves his father to the point of hero worship. There's no way JE could accept that Jock was alive and had stayed away for so long.

JR?
I think that is right about JR having grieved Jock, and this was too much for him.

Of course had Wes turned out to be Jock then we never would’ve gotten one of J.R.’s best lines that if Clayton dies he dies because he never should’ve married my mama.

So, just watched the first episode of season 8 (DVD). JR comes home from work and is immediately confronted by Lucy who has figured out that he set Peter up then got the charges dropped in exchange for Sue Ellen moving back into his bedroom. Lucy screams furiously that no one in the family cared anything about anything or anyone else.

I really thought that was going to set up a major conflict between Sue Ellen and Lucy. I thought perhaps Lucy would confront Sue Ellen about leading Lucy to believe Peter liked her just so Sue Ellen could keep him close. I even hoped it would lead to a scene where Lucy would finally confront Sue Ellen about Mickey.

But nope.

The next time we see Lucy she is with JR and Sue Ellen at the hospital after Bobby is shot, happily making nice with them both. Lucy never mentions Peter again.

To me, it was another lost opportunity for Lucy to actually have a real storyline that didn't involve a man.

They never knew what they wanted to do with her. There are literally dozens of examples of instances when Lucy could’ve jumped into a storyline and made an impact, only to have nothing come out of it. Then it was usually right back to a storyline that felt remanufactured but only with a different beau of the month.

One of the worst examples of Miss Ellie's hypocrisy was when she gave Clayton half of SF and asked
JR if he cared about her happiness.
Clearly, Miss Ellie didn't care about JR, Gary, and Bobby's happiness.
If she predeceased Clayton, the sons would have no claim on SF
Bobby was clearly unhappy.
He should have supported JR on this.

You make some valid points with this argument but I tend to believe that someone as reasonable as Clayton would’ve understood this if Miss Ellie did indeed die first. He might’ve felt obligated to work something out with the boys where they would have control of the ranch again. Perhaps begrudgingly where J.R. was concerned but I can’t see someone like Clayton keeping everything for himself and pushing Miss Ellie’s sons aside, especially Bobby whom he had a lot of respect for.

When did Casey find out that Lucy was a Ewing? When they met she introduced herself as Lucy Cooper, next thing he's coming to see her at Southfork. Is there a scene missing?

It was her who invited him over at Southfork, the clever girl... Now don´t complain of being scammed every now and then!

Agree 100%. Rewatching Dallas makes me realize how much they wasted Lucy. Her only goal was to find a man. Again another reflection of the utterly chauvanistic attitude of the writers
