Absolutely, look how detached he was to baby John.

Everyone critised Sue Ellen as a mother, but JR's behaviour was nasty and not one person in that family questioned it.

I'm in no way defending JR. The Ewing's had a terrible knack with n looking the other way when it came to J.R., but at least he had his reasons. Sue Ellen had absolutely no reason to act the way she did. I've heard of postpartum depression, but Sue Ellen took it to a new level.

Sue Ellen had more than postpartum depression. She said her baby reminded her of being used by two cruel men. She had indeed slipped into a deep depression on top of postpartum depression.

Sue Ellen loved her baby really and admitted to Dr Elby she loved him as well as saying the same to Bobby and Cliff, but felt so numb inside she couldn't express that love until "mother of the year".

She was also traumatised by her alcoholism, treatment by JR of being "caged like an animal" in the sanitarium and the accident which nearly cost her and her baby's life.

Then the kidnapping of her son which led to enormous guilt for her as well as trying to detach her feelings for fear of being hurt.

She had EVERY reason to take "it" to a new level.

No she didn't. It was still HER baby. What if she wasn't rich and didn't have a paid nurse and Pam tending to the baby. And she ALLOWED herself to be used. She went after Cliff to get back at JR. Sue Ellen was in no way innocent.

It was Cliff who admitted to Bobby and later Pam that it started off that way, him chasing Sue Ellen to get back at JR, then he fell in love with her, if Cliff was capable of that.

Sue Ellen confided in Dusty that she realised what proper love was when Bobby brought Pam to Southfork and when Cliff gave her the opportunity for love and to hurt JR, she took it.

Sue ellen was willing to leave JR and his money behind for Cliff, but he chose his political path first and got chased off by JR.
Sue Ellen wasn't innocent, but she fell for Cliff. She only wanted to hurt JR for how he treated her.

That all might be true, but Sue Ellen is a grown woman and she's ultimately responsible for the choices she makes. Let's be honest, Sue Ellen and Cliff used each other to get back at JR. And that's 100% on Sue Ellen because "she's the one that's married."

You bring up Dusty. He actually loved her. Yes, he wanted to do his rodeo thing, but Sue Ellen was looking for an excuse to leave. She ultimately leaves and after everything he did to her, she allows herself to get duped by JR, thinking he's a changed man.

So Sue Ellen chose to be verbally abused by her husband who neglected her? Yes she was the married one. Wow what a loving husband she had!
She chose to be "the marbles" in a game for Cliff's enjoyment? Winner takes the marbles and Cliff opted to be the loser.

Sue Ellen only ever wanted to be loved by somebody and was conditioned by her mother to accept money and position even without love and affection.

Sue Ellen loved Dusty and put his needs first when she ended it. Starved of love was it any wonder she fantasised about JR being a changed man?

Bobby once said, "Sue Ellen lives in a fantasy world where everything is perfect, she'd rather crawl into a bottle than face reality".

I'm not in anyway taking JR off the hook. JR was one of the worst husbands ever on TV.

No, Sue Ellen didn't choose to be verbally abused, but she allowed it to happen. She left JR and didn't even need his money, and she chose to go back to him, knowing full well what he was. Yes, she was weak, but she holds some of the blame.

"Allowing" her husband to verbally and physically abuse her was what Sue Ellen thought as normal until she saw Pam & Bobby's relationship. Her way of dealing with it led her to seek affection elsewhere and to the bottle as a way of coping.

Most abused people continue to return to their abuser as they are conditioned to believe the abuse will stop and the abuser has changed.

Sue Ellen wasn't weak, she tried hard to get JR to love her because she loved him. Her failing as a wife and her marriage ending would be a sign of weakness to her and she tried all she could for that not to happen.

I think an opportunity might have been missed with Garrison Southworth.
Garrison and Digger were friends. Maybe the two of them could have teamed. Of course, Cliff would have to be in charge since both were
in poor health.
Garrison's possible ownership of Southfork would have failed, so there could have been some other story

I have wondered about this.

If Garrison was presumed to be deceased - wouldn't the Ewings have had the resources to hire someone to confirm this,
or find him? He was able to avoid being found for decades?

Who owned SF at that time?
Ewing Oil? Jock and Ellie? Jock?

I don't know Texas law, but what I am trying to ask if Ellie had the legal right to transfer it. I doubt it.

Even so, Jock could have claimed ownership by adverse possession, or abandonment by potential owner.
If Jock paid the debt in lieu of foreclosure, he may have gained solo title.

Even if Garrison was awarded title, Jock could sue for all expenses to be repaid over decades.
Garrison could never pay that.

JR was right in this case. To be suspicious of an old man with a young attractive woman and their possible motives.
He didn't know she was a caretaker, and even if he did, he should still be suspicious.

I would even say that it was disrespectful of Miss Ellie to want to give away the property that Jock saved and worked.

All in all, maybe good television, but not a plausible real life story

You're right, it made for good TV and it was ridiculous that Miss Ellie would just hand over Southfork to her long, lost brother just because she thought "it was the right thing to do." And she didn't even think of all the work Jock has put into Southfork over years.

As for true ownership of Southfork, it seems to depend on the storyline. For the most part, it seemed to be owned by Miss Ellie. But during the Asian oil leases Storyline, it was apart of Ewing Oil.

As for JR, he was suspicious of anybody. That's not necessarily a bad trait, but more times than not, JR ended up being wrong.

You raise some really interesting points.

I've got to say I really enjoyed the episode because I adored Garrison straight away. Of course it was a stand alone episode and I don't believe he was mentioned again and obviously he came "home" to die which we never saw.

I was left slightly disappointed that Miss Ellie's brother only made one appearance and although I was young at the time it aired, it did leave so many unanswered questions.

I too found it strange that Miss Ellie just assumed her brother had died and this pointed towards them not being particularly close in later years, although she named Gary after him of course.

It would have been great to see Garrison in a few more episodes and have a better build up to his arrival.

If there was a threat to the Ewing fortune you can guarantee JR would be suspicious.

As I said I did enjoy the episode even if it was a little house on the prairie-ish and I used my own imagination to tie up some of those loose ends.

It still had one of the funniest delivered one liners from Jock, "He's been away for over 40 years and all he talks about is Digger Barnes".

I'm the true heir to Southfork.

So if you go on the tour make sure to have a good time and buy plenty of memorabilia.

I need the money. :)

Watching the episode where the find out that "JR is the daddy." It's a shame that they didn't come up with the concept of the Oil Baron's Ball until after Jock was killed off. Miss Ellie reserved a table and they got all dressed up for the DOA awards ceremony, which would later become the Oil Baron's Ball.

Lol...It has to be brought up again. Dallas had absolute no respect for women. Watching the episode where Pam finds out Digger wasn't her biological father. She heard the news and had to be sedated? Even Digger, on his deathbed, telling Miss Ellie that he had to confess because "someone have to take care of you."

This is what contributed to Pam's downward spiral. After having 2 miscarriages, Jenna returning and caught in the middle of her husband and brother, she was then told by her father who wasn't her father that he wasn't her father.
Evermore for Digger having the reputation he had, we assume he loved Pam and treated her as one of his own despite killing her natural father.

It's no wonder Pam didn't fully recover from her breakdown trance.
