Only because they weren't going to show domestic violence coming from one of the core characters.

If the Ray/Donna dynamic was on another type of show, Ray fits the criteria of a man that will eventually get violent. Go back and watch that scene and tell me that there wasn't some hate in Ray at that moment.
Ray was awful to Donna. I never understood why he always got a pass. He cheated on her and always withdrew his affection when he was feeling insecure about her success.

Bobby was the only Ewing brother who even approached being a good, loyal, loving husband.

Yes at times he was horrible and often used being insecure with Donna's success as an excuse for his rotten behaviour.

Bobby was the only Ewing brother who even approached being a good, loyal, loving husband
Well that's certainly debatable. I guess he never really physically cheated on Pam, but good and loving? Not always.

I agree with you. Ray should´ve have ended up with that Bonnie skank from the Longhorn Bar. She would´ve spared us two long insufferable years with Hyena Wade and her awful daughter Chachi. Or was it Joani?

True about Bobby, that's why I said "approaching" being a good husband.

All those Ewing marriages were disastrous. Probably because Ellie and Jock set a bad example.

ironically I feel like football star Bobby and beauty queen Sue Ellen might have been a better match for each other than the people they ended up with. He wouldn’t cheat like JR and she’d be more tolerant of his chauvinism than Pam.

Oh yes, even in those early days they looked so good together and he always looked out for her.

Sue Ellen was too old for Bobby. Lol

But as far as being a good husband, I thought Bobby did everything in his power to make Pam happy. I put most of their problems on Pam. We've discussed this before, whenever things got bad, Pam left. It was actually her who was unfaithful in their marriage. First with Alex Ward and then with Mark Grayson.

I thought he was pretty inappropriate with the Morgan Fairchild Jenna Wade.. Jenna #2 as well, but I think they were kind of “having problems” by then.

The writers basically couldn’t let a couple be happy for more than a handful of episodes at a time, maybe half a season.

Says who? No she wasn't.
9-10 years between the actors I think so not much difference between Bobby and Sue Ellen.
What was his and Pam's age difference? We probably really never knew!!
Wish we could ask Joan Rivers.

And poor Bobby (Patrick) got fed up of being perfectly nice.

I was thinking “Sue Ellen if she were Pam’s age” but agree that they were fine as-is. I think Sue Ellen was supposed to be only a couple of years older than Bobby, if that.. until aging several years suddenly in the “young Peter Richards” season..

(who needs Joan Rivers when, as the unimpeachable Scotty Demarest pointed out, Bobby couldn’t have possibly killed Hutch McKinney because he was busy celebrating his 6th birthday?)

Bobby was portrayed as a young, handsome playboy, who just happened to be the starting QB on the Texas University football team. Guys like him aren't chasing after women that are roughly 8-10 years older, when they can have their pick of the litter.

I believe Pam was perceived to be a few years younger than Bobby.

Some might. Some find women their age or younger to be dull. Not every guy wants young. Some men prefer older women.

Anyway, I never wanted them together permanently, just the odd fling would have been exciting.

Pick of the litter? Sounds like we're back with Patricia at Southfork Cathouse (what if thread).

until aging several years suddenly in the “young Peter Richards” season
Uhh I know. They purposely aged her for that, for more shock value probably.

She was still stunning in real life pics of that time.

I agree, and even Sue Ellen herself said a number of times that she married the wrong brother.

Grabbed this great summary from this post by James from London.
“I married the wrong brother,” says Sue Ellen to Bobby at one point. (She does this approximately once every ten years: “If I'd only met you first, Bobby, I would have married you instead of JR,” she told him shortly before John Ross’s birth in 1979. “I told you before I married the wrong brother,” she reminded him in 1988, around the time Lisa Alden made her bid for custody of Christopher.) This eventually leads to a near kiss that’s been some twenty years in the making. You get the sense Sue Ellen would be happy to take things further.

I got the feeling Sue Ellen and Bobby were fairly close in age.
Sue Ellen was meant to be 31 when the show started in 1978 (Sue Ellen was 20 in 1967 when she was crowned Miss Texas). Sue Ellen was characterised as depressed and aged out of being fun, which was supposed to contrast with the youthful demeanour of Bobby and Pam.
JR was 8 years Sue Ellen's senior.
Bobby's dream headstone indicates he was born in 1949.

But do you think this can be trusted? I mean, Pam also dreamt up non-existing emerald diggers, an entire Bond movie, resurrected dead people, made herself a partner in Ewing Oil, had Cliff seriously in love with someone other than himself and had J.R. and Sue Ellen reconcile.

Not questioning what you’re saying of course but forgive me for being a little apprehensive about believing in Pam’s dreams.

Apparently it it true, Bobby was born 16th February 1949 according to a shot of his license in season 14 Charade.
There was also a shot of his license in season 2 kidnapped that shows his test was taken 11/1/1966 (17?) which would make him 29 then. The same age as Patrick I believe.

Well, at least she got one thing right in that dream then. I’ll give her credit.
