Yes, while I had it on CD, I never had it on vinyl and it was the double album that swayed my ‘should I buy or not’ dilemma.

That sounds like win/win.

Are you parting with the CD versions of albums you buy on vinyl, or are you mostly buying albums you no longer have in any format?

It’s absolutely thrilling, exhilarating when that knock comes at the door and someone is delivering a box of records. It’s breathtaking just holding on to each album, opening it up and taking in the glory of vinyl and the inner-sleeve.

But this also creates a very difficult dilemma.

Which to play first, which to play next and then which of my other purchases do I play again.

I forgot to answer this.

Back somewhere in the middle of the 00s, I realised how easy it was to have everything on digital. I had moved from vinyl to CD and then finally onto iTunes. I ended up selling lots of my vinyl CDs and gave to charity those that didn't sell.

I regret that now, but can't do anything about it, so I'm looking at buying the albums that I still play today, and that itself is rewarding enough to help me forget about my earlier mistake.

It's really nice that you can now collect those favourite albums in a format that's authentic to the era. I've replaced albums I used to have on vinyl or cassette with CDs and it's never quite the same.

I certainly wouldn't have predicted that vinyl would make a comeback in the way it has. And now artists are even releasing cassettes. Actual tapes like Tracy Barlow used to play in her room. Changing music formats would make an interesting social history study, I think.

I was never really that into music as a kid and certainly up until secondary school was (mostly) happy to listen to my parents records, as well as having a few albums and singles on vinyl. But the few albums I had up to around 1983 were all on vinyl. After that it was mostly cassettes, but I still bought a lot of singles on vinyl.

I still boggle a little at buying two different formats for several years. But then if I'm still around in thirty years time I'll possibly look back at 2021 and boggle at the fact that I bought CDs but converted them straight to a digital format and put the CD on the shelf more or less unplayed.

I still have most of my old vinyl but I've duplicated the ones I'm likely to play with CDs. New purchases are on CD. I find the format much more convenient, and the discs themselves are more robust, less prone to the skipping which was a constant source of frustration in the olden days.

I hope that we will still have Vinyl or CD's 30 years down the line so that physical copies of music won't die out completely.

A couple more to add, and I’m really trying to cut back. The problem is I get twitchy fingers and instead of hours spent in a record store I’m looking online.

That looks the bee's knees, @Ome. Very smart indeed.

It's taken me back to the day it came out, seeing a display of these in HMV. I think I'd originally intended buying the vinyl but I ended up getting the cassette because it had the extra Dub Versions. And the CD version had different dubs again. Canny marketing, and a bit cheeky.

How does it sound?!

I wish it was available brand new. The vinyl is in mint condition, the cover is worn, but will pass.

I didn’t buy it at the time. My mate had it, so I got my thrill from him. We couldn’t afford much, so we would share each other’s. I did buy it on CD later, probably in the mid 90s and was chuffed with the extra mixes.

How does it sound?!
It sounds fantastic and I played it over and over for 4 consecutive days. It must be more than 20 years since I listened to these mixes and it just gave me instant joy.

I can’t remember if we’ve discussed this before, but have you been in an HMV shop recently? I’m loving the space they have given to vinyl and it’s fast becoming my go to shop when we are at local outlets.

Once digital became a thing, I don’t think I stepped into a record shop again, so it’s great to be back.
